NFL roundup: Seahawks considering Sherman at WR

Published

on

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he has considered using cornerback Richard Sherman as a wide receiver.

The Seahawks’ passing game is ranked 30th in the NFL by averaging less than 192 yards per game.

One idea that has emerged is using Sherman on offense. He played wide receiver at Stanford until a knee injury forced him to switch to cornerback.

“He’s been very clear in that intent for a long time around here,” Carroll told Seattle radio station KIRO on Friday. “It’s always been a conversation that we’ve had, and if I need him I’m going to him and he knows that.”

Sherman told the Seattle Times earlier in the week that he would like to play wide receiver.

“I’d be pretty good,” he said. “Shoot, you can hardly touch (receivers). So if you could hardly touch me, I’d have a nice day.”

The Seahawks host the Arizona Cardinals in a key NFC West matchup on Sunday.

—Buffalo Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes was fined $22,050 for unsportsmanlike conduct by the NFL.

The NFL said that Hughes “directed abusive language towards an official” during the Bills’ Nov. 13 game against the Miami Dolphins. It is not clear what he said to the officials that warranted the fine.

Hughes said he told the officials that they missed a holding penalty against the Dolphins but got no explanation as to why no penalty was called.

—Even though the San Francisco 49ers activated defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey from injured reserve earlier this week, he is still a few weeks away from being able to play, according to NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk.

Dorsey, who has been out all season with a torn biceps, has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins.

When the 49ers activated Dorsey, they placed nose tackle Ian Williams on injured reserve.

—The Indianapolis Colts waived wide receiver Griff Whalen and signed running back Zurlon Tipton to the active roster from the practice squad Saturday.

Whalen was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent in April 2012. In 19 NFL games (three starts), he has 26 catches for 282 yards with two touchdowns. He also contributed on special teams with 34 punt returns for 291 yards and 16 kickoff returns for 401 yards.

Tipton was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent in May out of Central Michigan and added to the practice squad on Sept. 11.

—Denver Broncos defensive end DeMarcus Ware was added to the team’s injury report because of an illness.

Ware is considered probable for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

The Broncos also signed running back Jeremy Stewart to the active roster and waived running back Kapri Bibbs.

—New Orleans Saints running back Khiry Robinson was downgraded to out for Monday night’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Robinson did not practice Saturday because of a forearm injury. He has not played since Oct. 19.
