Washington beat the Detroit Lions 21-17 in a preseason game Thursday in Landover, Md., but the Redskins endured a loss in the contest, as quarterback Robert Griffin III left in the first half with a concussion and a shoulder stinger.

Griffin was sacked three times on five pass attempts, fumbled twice and was hit on six of his eight drop-backs before being knocked out of the game. Coach Jay Gruden said Griffin was beginning the concussion protocol but that the quarterback’s shoulder was all right.

Griffin completed two of five passes for just 8 yards. His replacement, Colt McCoy, was 5-for-6 for 80 yards and a touchdown. McCoy immediately led the Redskins on an 80-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter.

McCoy fumbled at the Detroit 1-yard line on the final play of the first half, but he directed an 87-yard scoring drive on the first possession of the second half, finishing it with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Bell.

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford completed six of eight passes for 78 yards. His replacement, Dan Orlovsky, was 13-for-17 for 118 yards and two touchdowns, including a 5-yard scoring pass to Zach Zenner with 1:34 left in the third quarter that gave Detroit a 17-14 lead.

A 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kevin Cousins to Rashad Ross in the fourth quarter put the Redskins ahead to stay, 21-17.

Bills 11, Browns 10

Buffalo quarterback EJ Manuel threw a 14-yard scoring pass to Andre Davis with 1:31 left in the fourth quarter, then passed to Bronson Hill for the two-point conversion as the Bills won in Cleveland.

After that score, quarterback Johnny Manziel marched the Browns from their own 17-yard line to the Cleveland 45, scrambling 15 yards on third-and-20 before throwing an incompletion on fourth down.

After Browns starting quarterback Josh McKown went 7-for-10 for 57 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions, Manziel went 10-for-18 for 118 yards and also ran three times for 19 yards. His 19-yard scoring pass to Shane Wynn in the third quarter completed a 93-yard drive and accounted for Cleveland’s only touchdown.

Matt Cassel, the Bills’ No. 1 quarterback at the moment, did not play, nor did Bills running back LeSean McCoy or receivers Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods and Percy Harvin.

Tyrod Taylor, the starting quarterback for Buffalo on Thursday, finished 7-for-10 for 65 yards. He also ran four times for 41 yards.
