NFL roundup: Cowboys’ Randle faces shoplifting charge

Published

on

Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle was arrested on shoplifting charges for allegedly stealing a bottle of cologne and underwear from Dillard’s on Monday night.

Randle, whose 2014 base salary is $495,000, was charged with a Class B misdemeanor for theft of goods valued at between $5 and $50 and released on a writ bond at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Randle is coming off an impactful game Sunday at Seattle with 100 total yards (52 rushing, 48 receiving) on just nine touches as the Cowboys seek more support for the NFL leader in rushing attempts and yards, DeMarco Murray.

—Montgomery County (Texas) judge Kelly Case rejected a recusal motion filed by prosecutors during the arraignment of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson on child abuse charges last week and plans to remain on the bench for a trial that could begin Dec. 1.

Peterson did not verbally enter a plea at his initial court appearance, but the formal not guilty plea was made public Monday. At his arraignment, assistant district attorney Phil Grant pushed to remove Case from the proceedings on the basis on “bias and recent legal disagreements.”

A hearing to finalize Case’s status scheduled for Wednesday could be rescheduled because of a conflict for Peterson’s defense team involving lead attorney Rusty Hardin.

Peterson is charged with abuse after allegedly using a wooden switch to discipline his 4-year-old son. He does not deny using the thin tree branch, but Peterson said his intent was not to injure the young boy.

—A season that started with great promise came to a premature end for Miami Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno on Tuesday when Moreno was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a torn anterior cruciate knee ligament.

To replace Moreno on the roster, the Dolphins (2-3) reinstated defensive end Derrick Shelby, who was suspended Oct. 5, one day after his arrest on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest stemming from a nightclub incident.

—The Cincinnati Bengals placed wide receiver Marvin Jones on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday and signed free-agent wide receiver Greg Little to the roster.

Also on Tuesday Yahoo Sports reported that the Bengals had recently worked out free-agent quarterback. Pryor was released by the Seattle Seahawks in August and was reported to have a tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in September.

Ankle and foot injuries had sidelined Jones since training camp. He was cleared to return to practice after missing the first three regular-season games but suffered another injury on Sept. 29 and was unable to make his anticipated 2014 debut in Week 5.

Little played for the Cleveland Browns from 2011 to 2013.

—The Denver Broncos placed linebacker Danny Trevathan on injured reserve Tuesday with the designation to return.

In the Broncos’ 31-17 win over the New York Jets on Sunday, Trevathan reinjured the same leg that had a broken bone under the kneecap. He was playing in his second game since the injury originally occurred. It initially was thought that the latest injury would sideline him for six weeks, but on Tuesday the timetable for his return was adjusted to eight weeks.

That makes Trevathan eligible to resume practicing on Nov. 26 and allows him to return to the active roster before a Week 16 game against the San Diego Chargers on Dec. 14.

—The Cleveland Browns placed defensive lineman Armonty Bryant on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday after he damaged a knee in Sunday’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

To take his place on the roster, the Browns signed defensive lineman Sione Fua. The Browns also released wide receiver Lee Doss from the practice squad.

Bryant suffered ligament damage in the first quarter against the Steelers. He played in five games and started two this season, finishing the season with 11 tackles and one sack.

—The San Francisco 49ers re-signed quarterback Josh Johnson to a one-year deal on Tuesday and released safety Bubba Ventrone.

Johnson is back with the 49ers after he was released last Friday to allow the team to sign Kassim Osgood for special teams.

—Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has the hottest-selling jersey in pro football, according to data released Tuesday by the NFL Players’ Association.

Wilson soared past Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel, whose jersey was No. 1 on the NFL’s best-seller list for the first quarter of the fiscal year but dropped to seventh after he failed to win the starting job in a preseason battle with Brian Hoyer.

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was second, followed by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant, Manziel, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt.

—Right tackle Doug Free could miss one month with a fractured foot, raising the first serious hurdle for the Dallas Cowboys’ dominant offensive line and running game of the season.

Free, who has played left tackle and moved to the right side with Tyron Smith developing into a Pro Bowl blocker on the left side, has played in 77 consecutive games and is pushing the coaching staff to play Sunday against the Giants despite the broken bone. Owner Jerry Jones said the team is opting to rest Free.

His replacement, Jermey Parnell, has tender ribs after replacing Free with 3 minutes, 23 seconds remaining in the Week 6 win at Seattle. Jones said Parnell will play this week.

—Claims by the Carolina Panthers that linebacker Vontaze Burfict of the Cincinnati Bengals intentionally twisted their ankles are being investigated by the league office, which could levy a fine or suspension if evidence of intent to injure is revealed.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and tight end Greg Olsen experienced ankle issues this season, and when they scored separate touchdowns on Sunday, Burfict appeared to twist their ankles. Last season, Burfict led the NFL with eight personal foul penalties.

“I don’t have any comment on it,” Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Monday. “Ankle wrenching … that sounds like the WWF.”
