NFL roundup: Colts’ Richardson won’t play vs. Patriots
Running back Trent Richardson did not make the trip to New England with the Indianapolis Colts for personal reasons and will not play in the AFC Championship Game, the team announced Saturday.
Richardson also was inactive for the divisional round of the playoffs and did not carry the ball in the wild card round. He rushed for 519 yards on 159 carries this season, averaging 3.3 yards per carry.
“That situation will never happen to me again,” Richardson said this week of being in active. “Anybody can quote me, today, because it’s never going to happen again.”
Dan Herron and Zurlon Tipson will be the Colts’ primary backs against the Patriots, coach Chuck Pagano said.
—The Buffalo Bills hired former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer to be the team’s offensive line coach, according to reports Saturday.
Bills coach Rex Ryan reportedly also added David Lee as quarterbacks coach.
Kromer spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator in Chicago. The Bears ranked 15th in passing yards (237.0) and 27th in rushing yards (90.1) last season.
Kromer’s tenure in Chicago was most notable for his admission that he had been the source of anonymous quotes criticizing quarterback Jay Cutler. Kromer later made a tearful apology in front of the team and Cutler.
Lee spent 2012 as quarterbacks coach with the Bills and the last two seasons coaching the quarterbacks under Ryan with the Jets.
—Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase will interview for the same position with the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to a report by Michael Silver of NFL Media.
Gase previously had been on the radar of several teams looking for head coaches and seemed to be the favorite to replace Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco until the 49ers promoted defensive line coach Jim Tomsula.
After John Fox left the Broncos earlier in the week, Gase interviewed with general manager John Elway, but the Broncos now appear focused on hiring Elway’s former teammate, Gary Kubiak.
The Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams also reportedly have asked permission from the Broncos to speak with Gase about coordinator positions.
—Defensive lineman Joe Vellano of the New England Patriots was signed to the 53-man active roster from the practice squad.
To make room for Vellano, tight end Steve Maneri was released.
Vellano, 26, joined the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of Maryland in 2013.
—Raiders owner Mark Davis wants to keep the franchise in Oakland but admits he has no idea where the team will be playing in 2016.
Davis expects to sign a one-year extension with the Coliseum shortly. He said Friday that an agreement has been reached and is awaiting formal approval from the city, county and NFL before the team can sign it.
“We are trying to get something done here, so we’re signing another one-year extension,” Davis told reporters. “Plus, our fans proved to us that we should be here.
“We want to be here. We’re not using any other place, city or whatever, as leverage. It’s not that way. It’s known that, no matter what we do here, it will not be as valuable or economically as great for the Raiders as if we went somewhere else. That’s known. But we still want to be here.”
—Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was added to the Pro Bowl roster.
Maclin will replace Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas for his first Pro Bowl trip. Thomas will not play due to injury.
Maclin, 26, recorded career highs in 2014, catching 85 passes for 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns. He missed the 2013 season after suffering a torn ACL in training camp.
—Philadelphia coach Chip Kelly hasn’t committed to next season’s starting quarterback just yet, but running back LeSean McCoy feels the job belongs to Nick Foles.
McCoy said on NFL Network on Friday evening that Foles should remain the starter and teammates view him as a leader in the locker room.
“I like Nick. The person and player that everybody thought he was, he is. There were a lot of injuries this year. Nick obviously got injured. He gets all of the blame and he shouldn’t,” said McCoy, who finished third in the league with 1,319 yards rushing in 2014. “I think Nick’s a good quarterback. He’s the leader of our team. Things just didn’t work out for him this year due to injury, but we’ve got his back. As a team, we didn’t play well enough to win and get into the playoffs.”
