NFL roundup: Chiefs’ Berry may have lymphoma

Published

on

A mass was discovered on the chest of Kansas Chiefs safety Eric Berry, and the team’s trainer said it could be lymphoma, the team announced Monday.

Berry was put on the Chiefs’ non-football injury list on Monday and will not play in Sunday night’s home game against Denver.

No diagnosis has been made, but head trainer Rick Burkholder said the “leading consideration” for what Berry has is lymphoma.

Berry is scheduled to visit a lymphoma specialist at Emory University in Atlanta.

The mass was discovered following Thursday night’s game against the Oakland Raiders.

–Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden seemed to say Robert Griffin III will remain the starting quarterback this week, although he left some wiggle room.

“Our starting lineup is not etched in stone for Sunday’s game,” Gruden said. “We’ll evaluate everybody today and tomorrow. … But we have every intent that Robert will be the starter this week.”

–Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer said the team is investigating reports of a fight that took place at an upscale apartment in downtown Cleveland on Friday night that involved rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel.

According to the police report, the brawl was set off when a fan wanted to give Manziel a hug.

When police arrived, they described the scene as a “riot” with about 20 people and two security guards involved.

–Browns’ ball-hawking safety Tashaun Gipson did not suffer a torn ACL as the team first feared, but he will be lost for the rest of the regular season with a grade 3 MCL injury, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

–Houston Texans’ quarterback Ryan Mallett aggravated a pectoral injury during warmups of Sunday’s 22-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and will be lost for the season, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Mallett, who started the past two games, underwent an MRI on Monday and the injury was confirmed.

–The Denver Broncos apparently are not satisfied with their kicking situation and will explore other options this week.

Among the kickers they will try out are Jay Feely and Connor Barth, according to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports.

Brandon McManus missed a 33-yard attempt in the third quarter of Denver’s 39-36 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday and has missed four attempts this season.

–Minnesota Vikings right tackle Phil Loadholt reportedly suffered a torn pectoral muscle Sunday and is out for the season.

Loadholt was injured in the Vikings’ 24-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported.

–The Pittsburgh Steelers welcomed back linebacker Jarvis Jones to the practice field.

Jones dislocated his right wrist in the third game of the season and was placed on the injured reserve/designated to return list.

The Steelers have until Dec. 15 to add Jones to the active roster or place him on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

–The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed fullback Jorvorskie Lane on Injured Reserve because of a right leg injury.

The Tampa Bay Times reported Lane has a broken bone in his lower leg and will have surgery Tuesday. He is finished for the season.

–The Indianapolis Colts signed free agent outside linebacker Victor Butler to the active roster and waived defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles, the Colts announced.

–NFL officials and representatives of the players union will meet Tuesday to discuss revisions to the league’s personal conduct policy. This will be the fourth time the two sides will convene to discuss revisions.

–The NFL said it will review the final play of Sunday’s New England-Detroit game in which Detroit center Dominic Raiola snapped the ball then dove at the legs of New England defensive lineman Zach Moore, incurring the wrath of Patriots coach Bill Belichick and others.

–The Baltimore Sun reported that former Ravens running back Ray Rice’s appeal might be decided as early as Monday.

Former federal judge Barbara S. Jones was expected to hand down her ruling late last week. Rice’s appeal of his indefinite suspension has been under review for nearly 10 days.
