NFL roundup: Brady throws TD pass, two interceptions

Tom Brady led an 80-yard scoring drive just before halftime and the New England Patriots edged the Carolina Panthers 17-16 on Friday night in Charlotte, N.C.

Brady, who has appealed a four-game suspension handed down by the NFL for his role in the “Deflategate” controversy, threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Scott Chandler to put New England (2-1) up 7-6 at halftime. Overall, Brady completed 7 of 13 passes for 84 yards and was intercepted twice.

Cam Newton was 17-for-28 for 160 yards and a touchdown, but the Panthers (2-1) dropped four of his passes in the first half.

Lions 22, Jaguars 17

Drew Stafford threw two touchdown passes and Zach Zenner’s 3-yard touchdown run with 1:41 left in the fourthl quarter lifted Detroit (2-1) at Jacksonville (1-2).

Stafford threw a 62-yard deep pass to Golden Tate for a second-quarter touchdown and found wide receiver Corey Fuller for a 4-yard score later in the quarter. Calvin Johnson sat out his third straight game for Detroit.

Blake Bortles had 245 yards on 20-of-29 passing for Jacksonville.

Chiefs 34, Titans 10

Alex Smith completed 16 of 18 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns in one half and Kansas City (3-0) remained perfect in the preseason in a game called with 3:50 to go in Kansas City, Mo., because of nearby lightning strikes.

Rookie Marcus Mariotta completed 7 of 11 passes for 99 yards for Tennessee (1-2).
