NFL roundup: Bills arrive in Detroit
The Buffalo Bills landed in Detroit on Friday afternoon and were scheduled for a light practice at Ford Field.
The team managed to round up all 53 players and the coaches from snowbound Buffalo and get them to the airport for the trip to Detroit, where the Bills will play the New York Jets on Monday.
With Ralph Wilson Stadium rendered unplayable by record snowfall this week in the greater Buffalo area, the NFL moved the home game for the Bills to Detroit’s Ford Field. Because the Bills were unable to practice for the past two days during a driving ban in Buffalo, the game moved from the scheduled Sunday 1 p.m. ET kickoff to Monday night at 7 p.m. ET.
Tickets to the game will be free. Bills and Lions season-ticket holders were offered free tickets Friday. Tickets will be available at large on Saturday.
The Lions also announced they will conduct a raffle during the game to benefit the American Red Cross of Western and Central New York Disaster Relief Fund.
—Suspended Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson insists he is remorseful and has vowed to never use a switch as discipline on any of his children again.
In an interview with USA Today published Thursday night, Peterson expressed regret for injuring his 4-year-old son.
“I won’t ever use a switch again,” Peterson said. “There’s different situations where a child needs to be disciplined as far as timeout, taking their toys away, making them take a nap. There’s so many different ways to discipline your kids.”
Peterson, who pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor reckless assault and received two years of probation, also said he is undergoing counseling.
On Tuesday, the NFL suspended Peterson without pay for at least the remainder of the season for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
Peterson’s appeal of his suspension will be heard Dec. 2 by former NFL executive Harold Henderson, according to a report Friday by Jay Glazer of FOX Sports.
—New England Patriots running back Jonas Gray, who had a breakout game last Sunday, was sent home Friday after he reportedly overslept and arrived late to the team facility.
Gray’s phone died so his alarm did not go off, a source told Mark Garafolo of FOX Sports. When Gray arrived at Gillette Stadium, coach Bill Belichick told him to leave.
Gray texted teammates to apologize, Garafolo reported, and planned to return later in the day to apologize to Belichick in person.
Gray, 24, ran for 201 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 11.
Gray’s gaffe comes a day after the Patriots brought back running back LeGarrette Blount, who played for the Patriots in 2013 and was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers this week.
Belichick said the team wanted to re-sign Blount in the offseason, but the running back signed with Pittsburgh. He is back with New England on a two-year deal, and Belichick said his playing time “will be up to him.”
“When he gets an opportunity, (it’s) how much he can take advantage of it, how much he can be productive and what he can do with those opportunities (that) will determine how many more there are,” the coach said. “It’s totally up to him. We’ve talked about that. He knows that’s the way it is, and he’s excited about it.”
—Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Friday that the team wants running back Marshawn Lynch for “as long as he can play.”
Carroll reiterated his Thursday comments to USA Today that the Seahawks have not said Lynch won’t return for the final year of his contract in 2015.
“He’s under contract for next year,” Carroll said. “We’d be thrilled to have him playing for us next year. We’ll do everything we can to get that done.”
—Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald missed practice for a third straight day Friday and will be a game-time decision when the Arizona Cardinals face the Seahawks in a big NFC West matchup in Seattle on Sunday.
Fitzgerald suffered a sprained left knee in Arizona’s 14-6 victory over the Detroit Lions last Sunday, and his streak of 110 consecutive starts appears in jeopardy.
If Fitzgerald can’t play, Jaron Brown will be expected to see more playing time next to John Brown (34 catches, 468 yards, five touchdowns) and Michael Floyd (26-454-4).
—Cleveland Browns tight end Jordan Cameron returned to practice Friday for the first time since suffering a concussion on Oct. 26, but he was ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.
“We’re hopeful where he is at this point that we’ll have him for next week,” coach Mike Pettine said.
Cameron has missed the past three games and requires medical clearance by an independent neurologist in order to play next week, when the Browns are scheduled to play at Buffalo.
—Denver Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders practiced fully Friday and is probable for the Broncos’ game vs. the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
Tight end Julius Thomas is questionable, and running backs Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman remain out.
Sanders suffered a concussion Sunday in Denver’s 22-7 loss in St. Louis, but coach John Fox said he was cleared for action Thursday night.
—The Kansas City Chiefs signed wide receiver Jason Avant on Friday after he was released by the Carolina Panthers just days earlier.
The 31-year-old veteran played in 11 games for the Panthers this season and had 21 receptions for 201 yards.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid is familiar with Avant, having coached him for eight years with the Philadelphia Eagles. Avant had 259 receptions for 3,199 yards and 10 touchdowns during his time with the Eagles.
—Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Allen suffered an ankle injury against the New England Patriots last Sunday night and was unable to practice all week. He has 26 catches for 374 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Coach Chuck Pagano also said cornerback Greg Toler (concussion) and offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus (shoulder) were ruled out.
—The Atlanta Falcons activated wide receiver Drew Davis from the physically unable to perform list and waived wide receiver Freddie Martino on Friday.
The 6-foot-1, 204-pound Davis was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent in 2011. He has appeared in 32 games, with 16 receptions for 216 yards and three touchdowns, while also playing a key role on special teams. He underwent foot surgery in July.
