NFL roundup: 49ers hire Tomsula as head coach
The San Francisco 49ers stayed in-house for their next head coach and elevated Jim Tomsula from defensive line coach on Wednesday.
Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase was thought to be the other leading contender for the 49ers’ head coaching job.
The 46-year-old Tomsula, who has served as San Francisco’s defensive line coach for the past eight years, will take the job vacated by Jim Harbaugh.
In addition to the defensive line duties with the 49ers, Tomsula previously took over as the team’s interim coach for the final game of the 2010 season after Mike Singletary was fired as head coach.
—The Oakland Raiders named Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio as their head coach on Wednesday, sources told The Sports Xchange.
The other finalist for the job was Tony Sparano, who was the interim coach for the final 12 games of the season.
The 51-year-old Del Rio served as the Broncos’ defensive coordinator for three years. He grew up in the Bay Area and was the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2011, compiling a 68-71 record while twice guiding the team to the playoffs. He also served as interim coach of the Broncos in 2013 when then-head coach John Fox had health issues.
—The New York Jets officially announced the hiring of Todd Bowles as their new head coach on Wednesday.
Bowles, the Arizona Cardinals’ defensive coordinator, replaces Rex Ryan. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Bowles is receiving a four-year contract. The 51-year-old spent two years guiding the Arizona defense. Before that, he was the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator in 2012. He had a stint as the Miami Dolphins’ interim coach in 2011, winning two of three games after stepping up from his duties as secondary coach.
According to ESPN.com, Bowles was seeking Dolphins defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers to be his defensive coordinator. The 45-year-old Rodgers has worked for the Dolphins since 2008 but before that was a member of the Cowboys’ coaching staff along with Bowles. Other media reports identified well-traveled Chan Gailey as Bowles’ top choice for offensive coordinator.
—Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn now appears to be the favorite to get the Atlanta Falcons’ head-coaching job after Todd Bowles landed with the New York Jets.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Falcons are willing to wait for Quinn, who already met with them once but is now preparing for Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers.
The Falcons also are interviewing Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin on Wednesday, but sources said Quinn is their target to become the next head coach.
—The new coach of the Buffalo Bills is doing his best to fit in as a Buffalonian.
Rex Ryan made his first public appearance in western New York on Tuesday night, accompanying Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly to the Big Tree Inn down the block from Ralph Wilson Stadium, before making his way to a Buffalo Sabres game.
Fired after six seasons as the New York Jets coach, Ryan is returning to an area he spent much time in as a child. His father, Buddy Ryan, was an assistant coach for the University at Buffalo from 1962 to 1968.
“I understand the history of the AFL history and the history of this franchise,” Ryan said.

—The Washington Redskins plan to hire San Diego Chargers linebackers coach Joe Barry as their defensive coordinator, NFL Network reported Wednesday.
Barry would replace Jim Haslett, who parted ways with the Redskins after five seasons. In 2014, the Redskins ranked 20th in total yards and 29th in points allowed.
Barry, 44, has spent the last four seasons with the Chargers after stints with USC and the Tampa Buccaneers, all as linebackers coach. He also was the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2007 and 2008.
—Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player by the Pro Football Writers of America on Wednesday.
Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray was named Offensive Player of the Year and Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt was chosen as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year.
