NFL notebook: Willis retires after eight seasons with 49ers
San Francisco 49ers inside linebacker Patrick Willis reluctantly walked away from football on Tuesday, announcing his retirement from the NFL at age 30.
The seven-time Pro Bowl selection said foot injuries forced him to end his career after eight productive seasons.
“Football has been everything to me and it’s provided an amazing platform to me,” Willis said. “It’s my health first.”
Willis was named to the Pro Bowl in seven of his eight seasons since he was drafted 11th overall in 2007. He was Defensive Rookie of the Year and a six-time All-Pro.
—For being the overall top pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the past 12 months have been pretty tough for Jadeveon Clowney.
The Houston Texans’ outside linebacker missed 10 games with various injuries ranging from suffering a hernia and a concussion and having microfracture surgery on his knee. Now, multiple reports detail an incident in the early morning hours of March 4 when Clowney was bit by a pit bull owned by teammate D.J. Swearinger. Clowney ended up at Houston-area emergency room and police were notified.
The bite was termed “minor” but it did break the skin. According to the police report, the dog’s vaccinations are up to date.
—Pam Oliver will remain with Fox Sports’ No. 2 broadcast team for NFL games for the next two seasons.
Oliver admitted to being disappointed at being replaced by Erin Andrews as the sideline reporter with the No. 1 team of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman last season, and 2014 was expected to be her final one as a sideline reporter. However, Fox Sports president & COO Eric Shanks and executive producer John Entz noticed Oliver’s work with the booth team of Kevin Burkhardt and John Lynch and the sides agreed to keep the trio together through the length of Oliver’s contract, according to SI.com’s Richard Deitsch.
