NFL notebook: Vick visits Steelers
The Sports Xchange
Michael Vick was scheduled to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday with backup Bruce Gradkowski undergoing surgery for a dislocated finger on his left hand.
Vick’s first free-agent visit since playing last season with the Jets could lead to him becoming Ben Roethlisberger’s primary backup. Landry Jones, who took every snap in the preseason opener for the Steelers, is likely to remain on the roster as a third quarterback.
Vick turned 35 in June.
In a separate transaction, the Steelers signed offensive lineman Doug Legursky and placed wide receiver David Nelson on the Reserve/Injured List.
–Former Washington Redskins and Chicago Bears quarterback Rex Grossman is scheduled to work out for the Atlanta Falcons.
Grossman played for Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan with the Redskins and before that with the Houston Texans.
Grossman, 34, would be added as a backup behind starter Matt Ryan.
–Veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne and the New England Patriots finalized a one-year deal worth up to $3 million.
Wayne, 36, spent 14 years with the Indianapolis Colts and faced the Patriots in many big games during that time as those two teams dominated the AFC in the 2000s.
The Patriots also placed wide receiver Brian Tyms on injured reserve with a foot injury.
–The Miami Dolphins placed free safety Louis Delmas on injured reserve after he tore the ACL in his right knee last week.
Delmas was injured during non-contact activity while covering wide receiver Ted Ginn during a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers. He tore the same ACL that was surgically repaired 10 months ago.
–Indianapolis Colts outside linebacker Robert Mathis was taken off the physically unable to perform list and placed on the active roster Tuesday.
Mathis has returned sooner than expected from a torn Achilles suffered last September followed by months of rehabilitation work.
–Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans is out for the rest of the preseason with a hamstring injury.
Evans could return for Week 1, when the Buccaneers play the Tennessee Titans, head coach Lovie Smith.
–The Cincinnati Bengals terminated the contract of quarterback Josh Johnson and waived college free agents Erick Dargan and Kalafitoni Pole.
–Tennessee Titans cornerback Jason McCourty underwent groin surgery Monday and his goal is to play in the Sept. 13 opener. A more likely projection is Week 5, following the first three games and the Titans’ bye week, ESPN reported.
–Head coach Mike McCarthy said the Green Bay Packers have one goal for 2015 and the mission is unchanged in the wake of wide receiver Jordy Nelson’s season-ending right knee injury.
The formation, and roles within the Packers’ vaunted offense, could shift. Randall Cobb, re-signed as an unrestricted free agent in March, is expected to remain in the slot wide receiver role. If the Packers utilize three-wide receiver formations as the base offense even without Nelson, McCarthy would be calling on Davante Adams to fill Nelson’s sizable shoes.
–Center Chris Myers formally announced his retirement from the NFL. The 10-year veteran played for the Houston Texans from 2008-2014 and before that was with the Denver Broncos.
