NFL notebook: Seahawks reportedly offer Lynch an extension
The Seattle Seahawks have offered running back Marshawn Lynch a contract extension that could possibly keep him in Seattle for the rest of his career, sources told NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.
Lynch is set to become a free agent after the 2015 season. If the extension is signed, Lynch reportedly would make $10 million in 2015 instead of the $5 million he is currently due next season, the final year of what originally was a four-year, $31 million deal.
Seahawks general manager John Schneider said during Super Bowl week that he “kind of” loves Lynch’s act.
Lynch had another huge season with 1,306 rushing yards and 17 total touchdowns. He has rushed for at least 1,200 yards in each of the past four seasons.
— Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman confirmed he will play in Super Bowl XLIX.
Sherman is awaiting the birth of his first child, a son, and his girlfriend is near full-term pregnancy with a due date next week. Sherman said this week that he had a plan in place for Sunday’s game against the Patriots if his son is born early.
Sherman (elbow) and Seahawks safeties Earl Thomas (shoulder) and Kam Chancellor were on the injury report for Seattle but all three will play.
–Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who said Friday he hasn’t made up his mind about playing in 2015, could decide as early as this week that he is returning for an 18th season, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
Sources said Manning has been persuaded to play under new head coach Gary Kubiak, who has said he is willing to fit his scheme for the quarterback’s strengths.
–Cornerback Marcus Burley was the most notable name among the Seahawks’ seven game-day inactives for Super Bowl XLIX.
The second-year player out of Delaware was a key reserve during the regular season, appearing in 13 games and registering 35 tackles, five passes defensed and an interception.
The Seahawks other inactives: quarterback B.J. Daniels, center Patrick Lewis, guard Keavon Milton, defensive tackle David King, offensive tackle Garry Gilliam and wide receiver Kevin Norwood.
–Running back Jonas Gray was among the New England Patriots’ game-day inactives for Super Bowl XLIX.
He ushed for 201 yards and four touchdowns in a Nov. 16 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, but has logged only 24 carries over the Patriots’ eight games since.
The Patriots’ other inactive players: defensive end Zach Moore, wide receivers Josh Boyce and Brian Tyms, defensive tackle Joe Vellano, offensive lineman Jordan Devey and running back James White.
–The NFL has not yet interviewed Patriots coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady in the two weeks since the league began investigating whether the team deliberately underinflated footballs, according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.
According to reports, the Baltimore Ravens contacted Colts coach Chuck Pagano, who was an assistant coach for the Ravens for four seasons, to be aware of underinflated footballs before the AFC title game.
“I heard all that — I couldn’t believe it when I heard it,” Harbaugh said on NBC’s Super Bowl pregame show. “It’s ridiculous, it never happened. I never made any call. Nobody in our organization made any call. As a matter of fact, just to make sure I had all the facts, I called up Chuck Pagano this week and asked him, ‘Did anybody else in our organization tip you off about deflated footballs?’ and he said, ‘No way.'”
–Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis could possibly become a free agent this offseason and, if that happens, he reportedly would be pursued by the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills.
Sources told ESPN that the Jets want to go after Revis to see if they can bring him back to New York. The report said the Jets have already been preparing how to best make their run at Revis.
–The NFL is investigating the Atlanta Falcons’ use of artificial crowd noise in the Georgia Dome over the past two seasons, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
According to Sunday’s report, the offense is expected to result in discipline, with the Falcons being fined and possibly losing a draft choice.
–Ann Mara, the New York Giants’ co-owner and widow of Wellington Mara, died early Sunday morning at the age of 85.
Often referred to as “The First Lady of Football,” she died due to complications from a head injury suffered in a fall two weeks ago.
–Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand said he expects the team will be able to re-sign defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
“I really do believe he’s got a lot invested in here, in himself and the community and the football team,” Lewand said during an interview on WDIV-TV in Detroit. “He wants to have success in the NFL, obviously, but he wants to do that with us.
The All-Pro Suh is eligible to become a free agent if the team does not use its franchise tag on him by March 2. The franchise tag reportedly would be $26.9 million for 2015.
