NFL notebook: RB Bush to sign with 49ers

Published

on

Running back Reggie Bush agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers, ESPN reported Saturday.

The 30-year-old Bush also visited New Orleans, where he played five seasons after coming out of USC, and New England during the week before deciding on the 49ers.

Bush will join Carlos Hyde and Kendall Hunter in trying to replace Frank Gore, who left the 49ers for Indianapolis.

Bush has two 1,000-yard rushing seasons in the last four years, but injuries limited him to 297 yards on 76 carries with two touchdowns for Detroit last season.

In addition, the 49ers and offensive lineman Erik Pears reached an agreement on a two-year deal, according to reports. Pears, 32, was with the Buffalo Bills since 2010, starting in 56 of 57 games he played in. He started all 16 games at right guard for the Bills last season after previously seeing action at right tackle.

The 49ers also agreed to terms with former San Diego Chargers cornerback Shareece Wright on a one-year deal. Wright, 27, was originally drafted by the Chargers in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. The four-year veteran played in 44 games for San Diego, registering 129 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble. He also added 14 special teams tackles.

—Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s new contract extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly has a base value of $99 million over five years, with escalators that can reach $108 million.

Financial terms of the extension were not revealed when the Steelers made the announcement Friday, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported some of the salary numbers Saturday. The report did not include the guaranteed money, including the signing bonus.

A source told Pro Football Talk that the value of Roethlisberger’s contract would not be leaked at the specific direction of the team and the player.

Roethlisberger was in the final year of an eight-year, $102 million deal and was set to make $11.6 million in 2015. He had a salary-cap number of $18.395 million, but the Steelers declined to say whether the extension lowered the cap hit for 2015.

Roethlisberger had one of his best seasons in 2014, setting career highs by completing 67.1 percent of his passes for 4,952 yards and 32 touchdowns.

—The Tennessee Titans added another component to their defense with former 49ers cornerback Perrish Cox reaching a contract agreement.

According to NFL.com, Cox’s deal is for three years and $15 million. Last season, the 28-year-old Cox started 14 games for the 49ers and had five interceptions.

—The Baltimore Ravens agreed to terms with safety Kendrick Lewis on a three-year contract.

Lewis, 26, started 16 games for the Houston Texans last year and had a team-high 84 tackles, six passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two interceptions. One of the interceptions was returned for a touchdown.

—The Minnesota Vikings released wide receiver Greg Jennings, a nine-year veteran.

The 31-year-old Jennings was signed by the Vikings to a five-year, $45-million contract two seasons ago, but none of his $8.9 million base salary was guaranteed next season. In two seasons with Minnesota, he caught 127 passes for 1,546 yards and 10 touchdowns.

—The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to re-sign safety Ron Parker to a five-year deal, according to reports. The deal is worth $30 million, the Kansas City Star reported.

Parker, 27, spent the previous two years with the Chiefs and started 15 of the 16 games last season. He totaled 94 tackles, 12 pass deflections, one interception and one forced fumble.

—The St. Louis Rams agreed to terms to bring back free agent wide receiver Kenny Britt, according to reports.

The agreement reportedly is a two-year, $9.125 million deal worth up to $14 million. Britt receives $4.3 million guaranteed.

In his first season with St. Louis, Britt started 13 of 16 games in 2014, catching 48 passes for 748 yards and three touchdowns. He had played his previous five seasons with Tennessee, which drafted him in the first round of the 2009 draft.
