NFL notebook: Ravens WR Smith tears Achilles, out for season

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith tore his Achilles tendon during the third quarter Sunday against the San Diego Chargers and will miss the rest of the season.

The question now is whether the NFL career of the 36-year-old Smith is over. He had said before the season started that the 2015 season would be his last.

Smith, who led the team with five catches for 82 yards, was injured making a 17-yard catch-and-run.

Earlier in the game, Smith had passed Hall of Famer Cris Carter for 10th place in career receiving yards. Smith has 41 catches for 588 yards and three touchdowns this season.

—Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has been playing with multiple fractured ribs, according to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports.

The ribs were broken at the same time Luck injured his shoulder in Week 3, Glazer reported Sunday.

Luck has never been disclosed on the injury reports as having injured ribs.

“To Luck’s credit he’s tried to quietly fight through it but clearly the combination has affected him,” Glazer wrote on Twitter.

Colts general manager Ryan Grigson issued a statement later Sunday.

“Our injury reports are accurate,” Grigson said. “If people have any questions about player injuries, they should refer to our injury reports.”

Luck, who missed games in Weeks 4 and 5 with what was reported at the time as a shoulder injury, has struggled since his return. He ranks 30th in the NFL in passer rating (76.3) as the Colts face the Carolina Panthers on Monday night.

—Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell left with a right knee injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

A team source told The Sports Xchange after the game that the Steelers are optimistic that he has a sprained MCL rather than a torn ACL.

Bell, who hurt his left knee against the Bengals last season, was taken to the locker room for further evaluation. He was injured when he was knee-bent awkwardly while being tackled. He rushed for 45 yards on 10 carries and caught two passes for 13 yards.

—Cleveland Browns cornerback Joe Haden and safety Donte Whitner both left Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals in the third quarter with apparent head injuries and were evaluated for possible concussions.

Haden left the game after being injured on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer to wide receiver Michael Floyd.

Haden missed the previous two games with a concussion but was cleared to practice on Wednesday. He also missed a game earlier in the season with a finger injury.

—Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte left Sunday’s game with nine minutes remaining in the third quarter with a right knee injury.

Forte was hit on the knee by Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith on a swing pass to the right from quarterback Jay Cutler.

When he got to his feet, Forte slowly walked to the bench and was able to continue walking to the locker room without help after a brief examination on the sideline.

—Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant returned Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks after missing five games with a broken left foot suffered in the season opener.

Bryant practiced for the first time last week.

Dallas’ biggest offensive weapon this side of injured quarterback Tony Romo has traditionally struggled against Seattle. Bryant has never scored in three previous games against the Seahawks, managing just 11 receptions and 156 yards.

—New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick injured his left thumb with 11:06 left in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders and left the game.

The right-handed Fitzpatrick injured his thumb while being tackled by Raiders safety Charles Woodson at the end of a 14-yard scramble. Geno Smith replaced Fitzpatrick, who had his thumb taped and remained on the sideline.

—The San Francisco 49ers declared running back Carlos Hyde (foot) and wide receiver Anquan Boldin (hamstring) inactive for Sunday’s game with the St. Louis Rams, ending a 46-start streak for Boldin.

Boldin is the team’s leading receiver with 31 receptions for 372 yards and two touchdowns, while Hyde paces the 49ers with 470 yards on 115 rushes, scoring three touchdowns.

—New York Giants linebacker Jon Beason was inactive for the third time this season in Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome.

Beason was listed as questionable on the team’s injury report because of an ankle injury.

The Giants ruled out J.T. Thomas on Friday, so they are down to two starting linebackers against New Orleans.

—Houston Texans safety Rahim Moore, a free-agent acquisition last offseason, was inactive on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans despite not appearing on the injury list this week.

Moore has underperformed for a disappointing Texans defense, but his appearance on the inactive list as a healthy scratch was a surprise. Andre Hal replaced Moore, who started six of seven games before Sunday, in the starting lineup.
