NFL notebook: Raiders sign RB Richardson

Published

on

Running back Trent Richardson landed with his third team in his brief NFL career, signing as a free agent with the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday.

Richardson, who was released last week by the Indianapolis Colts an unproductive 1 1/2 seasons, received a two-year, $3.9 million contract, according to the NFL Network.

Last season, Richardson played in 15 games and started 12 for the Colts, finishing with 519 yards rushing on 159 carries for a 3.3-yard average after losing his starting job during the season and then drawing a team suspension during the postseason. He joined the Colts in October 2013 in a deal with the Cleveland Browns

The Raiders hope Richardson will compete for the running back job that’s up for grabs after Maurice Jones-Drew retired and Darren McFadden left last week for the Dallas Cowboys. Richardson, the third overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft out of Alabama, will join third-year running back Latavius Murray as contenders for the opening in 2015.

—Washington Redskins backup quarterback Colt McCoy signed a one-year contract to return in 2015.

McCoy ended the season with a neck injury but played in five games, completing 71.1 percent of his passes.

McCoy, Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins are all in contract years this season. The Redskins reportedly have interest in drafting a quarterback with the fifth overall pick.

—Free agent defensive end Greg Hardy, who could be facing an NFL suspension after missing 15 games last season, is being pursued by the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks.

The Cowboys are hosting Hardy on Tuesday after losing out on a bid for defensive end Michael Johnson. Dallas could also lose defensive ends George Selvie and Anthony Spencer in free agency. The Seahawks are known for chasing edge players who can get to the quarterback.

Hardy played in the 2014 season opener and made $13.1 million under the franchise designation. The 26-year-old was arrested and charged with assaulting and threatening to kill ex-girlfriend Nicole Holder in May and placed on the commissioner’s exempt list in September. He has an 18-month probationary sentence, but all charges were dropped Feb. 9. Hardy has 34 career sacks, including 15 in 2013.

—The San Francisco 49ers signed former Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Erik Pears to a two-year contract, the team announced Tuesday.

Financial details were not disclosed by the team, but the deal is for a reported $4.7 million with $1 million guaranteed. According to the National Football Post, Pears will receive a base salary of $1.45 million both years and a signing bonus of $500,000.

The 6-foot-8, 316-pound Pears started all 16 games each of the past two seasons at right guard for the Bills after playing right tackle the previous three years. He is expected to compete for the starting left guard spot with 2014 third-round draft pick Brandon Thomas after Mike Iupati left the 49ers last week to sign with the Arizona Cardinals.

—Wide receiver Stevie Johnson signed with the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday, less than one week after his release from the San Francisco 49ers.

He started just one game and appeared in 13 with 35 receptions for 435 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson spent one season with the 49ers and didn’t meet expectations. He visited the Chargers on Friday and spent Monday in Foxborough with the New England Patriots.

The Chargers have chased but lost out on several receivers, including attempts to re-sign Eddie Royal (Bears) and a failed bid for Andre Johnson (Colts). There was reportedly interest in former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts III, but he joined the Houston Texans on Monday.

—The New England Patriots signed running back Travaris Cadet on Tuesday.

Cadet, a pass-catching specialist, played for the New Orleans Saints last year, compiling 38 receptions for 296 yards. For his career, the three-year veteran only has 11 carries.

The Saints signed Cadet as a free agent out of Appalachian State in 2012.

—Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, acquired from the Miami Dolphins last week for wide receiver Kenny Stills and a third-round pick, agreed to a new contract with the New Orleans Saints on Monday.

Ellerbe, who signed a $30 million deal with the Miami Dolphins in 2013 after the Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl, was due $21.5 million over the final three years of the deal. The new contract reduces his base salary by $7.4 million, earning $4.9 million guaranteed in 2015 and an average of $5 million over the final two years of the deal. His base salary in 2015 was cut to $1.1 million from $8.425 million.

Ellerbe will line up at inside linebacker to help cushion the blow of losing Curtis Lofton from the middle of the Saints’ defense. Ellerbe, 29, played only one game last season and is recovering from that hip injury suffered in September 2014.

—Former Big Ten defensive player of the year and San Francisco 49ers All-Rookie linebacker Chris Borland officially retired after one season in the NFL on Monday.

In response to the news Tuesday morning, Packers director of player personnel Eliot Wolf had a message via Twitter for those wondering if this is a landmark offseason.

“Anyone worried about the future of football should see the amount of calls & emails we get from kids literally begging to get into pro days,” he wrote Tuesday morning.

The 24-year-old Borland said in an exclusive ESPN interview that head-injury risks weren’t worth the money he was sacrificing by walking away from a contract that would have paid him more than $2 million over four years, including $547,000 in 2015.

—Offensive tackle Mike Harris re-signed with the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday.

Harris joined the Vikings in August 2014, when he was claimed off waivers from the San Diego Chargers, and played in 12 games during the 2014 season. He started the final five games of the season for the Vikings at right tackle.

In 2012-13, Harris played for the Chargers, starting 12 of 20 games.
