The New England Patriots released linebacker Brandon Spikes on Monday, one day after a car registered to him was found abandoned with front-end damage.

Massachusetts State police are investigating whether the damaged 2011 Mercedes Maybach found early Sunday morning in the median strip of Interstate 495 in Foxborough, Mass., is linked to a reported hit-and-run accident that sent three people to the hospital.

The Patriots re-signed Spikes, 27, to a one-year deal last month. He is a veteran of five NFL seasons with New England (2010-13) and the Buffalo Bills (2014).

The Patriots also signed cornerback Derek Cox on Monday.

—Cornerback Tracy Porter signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears.

The Bears also signed wide receiver Ify Umodu to a three-year contract and waived linebacker Jamil Merrell.

Porter last played for the Washington Redskins, who released the seven-year veteran last month. Porter, 29 in August, played for first-year Bears coach John Fox in Denver in 2012.

—The Houston Texans officially have an offensive coordinator. Coach Bill O’Brien revealed Monday that George Godsey, the Texans’ quarterbacks coach last season, will run the team’s offense.

Godsey and O’Brien go back to Georgia Tech, when O’Brien was a rising coach and Godsey was the team’s quarterback. They also coached together in New England, where Godsey was an offensive assistant in 2011 when O’Brien was offensive coordinator.

Godsey was the Patriots’ tight ends coach in 2012 and 2013, when O’Brien was coaching at Penn State.

—With contract negotiations with quarterback Russell Wilson seemingly stalled, the Seattle Seahawks reportedly have begun talks with linebacker Bobby Wagner.

Both 2012 draft picks are entering the final year of their rookie contracts, and the Seahawks would like to lock up one of them before next offseason.

According to NFL.com and The Seattle Times on Monday, the Seahawks have begun negotiating with Wagner, who is due $977,427 in the final year of his rookie deal.

—The Miami Dolphins signed wide receiver Tommy Streeter on Monday.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Streeter joins Miami after earlier this offseason being with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent the 2014 season on the practice squad and active roster with the Jaguars, the Dolphins’ practice squad and offseason with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In 2013, Streeter spent time on the practice squads of the Bucs, Buffalo Bills as well as the offseason with the Baltimore Ravens. Streeter originally was a sixth-round selection of the Ravens in the 2012 NFL Draft, but he spent that season on injured reserve.

—The Houston Texans, who will be featured on the 10th edition of the “Hard Knocks” series, are planning joint training camp practices with the Washington Redskins in Virginia.

The Redskins announced Monday that they will host three days of practices with the Texans at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond, Va., from Thursday, Aug. 6, through Saturday, Aug. 8.
