NFL notebook: Patriots celebrate with parade in Boston

on

Thousands of shivering fans lined the streets of Boston — many standing on top of massive snowbanks — to cheer on the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots during the victory parade Wednesday.

Fans chanted “Brady! Brady!” as players waved, celebrating the Patriots’ fourth NFL title in 14 years. Their 28-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday was their first championship in a decade.

The team rolled through downtown aboard the World War II-style amphibious “duck boat” vehicles that have become a part of the city’s championship parades.

Some fans climbed on giant piles of snow left from last week’s blizzard and Monday’s storm to get a glimpse of quarterback Tom Brady, coach Bill Belichick and the rest of the Patriots’ retinue.

Meanwhile, Belichick said the severe criticism of the Seahawks’ play calling at the end of Super Bowl XLIX is “totally out of line.”

The Seahawks’ decision to throw on second-and-goal from the 1-yard line with 26 seconds remaining resulted in cornerback Malcolm Butler’s game-saving interception.

“There has been a lot of criticism that I don’t think is anywhere close to being deserved or founded,” Belichick said during his weekly appearance on sports radio WEEI in Boston. “That football team is very good, very well-coached, and Pete (Carroll) does a great job.

“I know they are disappointed, as we’ve been in that spot a couple times ourselves. So the high that we feel is probably not as high as the low that they feel. But that’s a really good football team.”

—Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Letroy Guion was arrested Tuesday night in his hometown of Starke, Fla., for felony possession of marijuana and a firearm.

According to reports, the marijuana charge also is a felony because Guion was allegedly in possession of more than 20 grams of the illegal substance.

Guion, 27, just completed his first season with the Packers. He started all 16 games, recording 32 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He is slated to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

—Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle was cited for marijuana possession Wednesday morning in Wichita, Kan.

Police discovered the drugs while responding to an alleged domestic-violence incident.

Randle, 23, and a 22-year-old woman were found arguing in a hotel room at about 3 a.m. and police observed marijuana in the room.

—Indianapolis Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson has been arrested for simple assault after an altercation over a parking spot in Washington, D.C.

Television station ABC7 in Washington reported Jackson and a pizza delivery driver argued over a parking spot Tuesday night, which led to Jackson throwing two punches to the driver’s head.

—The Packers are expected to promote Ron Zook to special-teams coordinator, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Zook served as an assistant special-teams coach last season with Green Bay under Shawn Slocum, who was fired last week.

Zook, 60, has bounced back and forth between college and the NFL, coaching Florida (2002-04) and Illinois (2005-11) in between stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1996-1998), the Kansas City Chiefs (1999), New Orleans Saints (2000-01) and Packers.

—Outside linebackers coach James Bettcher has been promoted to defensive coordinator, replacing Todd Bowles, the Arizona Cardinals announced.

The team also announced the hiring of Bob Sanders, previously linebackers coach with the Oakland Raiders, to coach linebackers.

Mike Chiurco, who had spent the last two years as coach Bruce Arians’ assistant, will become assistant secondary coach. He replaces Ryan Slowik, who left to join Bowles’ staff with the New York Jets.

Wesley Goodwin, who had spent the last six seasons as an assistant at Clemson, was hired to take over Chiurco’s old job.

—The Atlanta Falcons continued to fill out new coach Dan Quinn’s staff, reportedly hiring defensive coaches Marquand Manuel and Jeff Ulbrich.

Manuel, who worked with Quinn in Seattle, will become his secondary coach and senior defensive consultant, ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported.

Ulbrich, UCLA’s defensive coordinator, will coach the Falcons’ linebackers, FOX Sports’ Alex Marvez reported.

Manuel and Ulbrich join a defensive staff led by coordinator Richard Smith and including passing game coordinator Raheem Morris, who will also be Quinn’s assistant head coach, and holdover defensive line coach Bryan Cox.

— The Cleveland Browns are facing the possibility of losing a draft pick, and general manager Ray Farmer faces a possible suspension in a case of suspected texting during games.

The NFL is attempting to determine whether Browns front-office personnel texted the coaching staff with play calls last season. That would violate league rules prohibiting electronic communications between players, coaches and team officials.

Cleveland.com reported that the probe could wrap up this week. Farmer could be suspended for as many as three to four games and the team might lose a middle-round draft pick, according to the report.

— The Chicago Bears re-signed cornerback Al Louis-Jean to a two-year contract and also reached agreement with Rick Perry to become the team’s assistant strength coach.

Louis-Jean, 21, appeared in nine games as a rookie last season, making 11 tackles. He was an undrafted free agent out of Boston College.

Perry comes to the Bears from Central Michigan University, where he was the director of strength and conditioning for the past five years. He has 20 years of experience as a collegiate strength and conditioning coach.

Perry will assist Jason George, who was an assistant strength coach in Denver under John Fox and joined Fox after he was named coach of the Bears last month.

— The Steelers re-signed long snapper Greg Warren to a one-year contract Wednesday.

Warren, a 10-year veteran, has appeared in 149 regular-season games and 10 postseason games with the Steelers since he joined the team as an undrafted free agent in 2005.

— The Seattle Seahawks signed tight end RaShaun Allen, defensive tackle Jimmy Staten and nine other players to future contracts Wednesday.

Each player spent time on Seattle’s active roster or practice squad in 2014.

The other players signed: safety Dion Bailey, running back Demitrius Bronson, guards Nate Isles and Drew Nowak, tackle Justin Renfrow, wide receiver Douglas McNeil, defensive ends Ryan Robinson and Julius Warmsley and linebacker Mike Zimmer.
