NFL notebook: Panthers’ Kuechly out vs. Texans
The Sports Xchange
Carolina Panthers middle linebacker Luke Kuechly was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans with a concussion.
Kuechly, who was previously listed as doubtful, sustained a concussion late in the first half of Week 1’s 20-9 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The All-Pro linebacker was present at Friday’s practice but did not participate in any drills.
Kuechly, who signed a $62 million contract extension last week, was not cleared by team doctors and the independent neurologist as of Friday.
Third-year linebacker A.J. Klein is expected to start in the middle in place of Kuechly.
During his three years at Boston College and through three-plus seasons as a pro, Kuechly had never missed a game. He has started 52 straight games, including three in the playoffs.
—Green Bay Packers right tackle Bryan Bulaga is expected to miss four to six weeks with a torn meniscus in his left knee.
The sixth-year player underwent surgery Saturday, according to NFL Media reports. Bulaga, who also has a sprained MCL, is expected to have to sit out up to six weeks.
Bulaga departed Thursday’s practice after hurting the knee. The team initially feared that Bulaga had torn his ACL.
—Packers safety Morgan Burnett was upgraded to probable for Sunday night’s game against the visiting Seahawks.
Burnett, who has a calf injury, was previously listed as questionable. He missed the season opener against the Chicago Bears. Micah Hyde started in his place at strong safety.
—The stalemate continues between the Seahawks and strong safety Kam Chancellor, still holding out in hopes of leveraging a new contract from the team, with no end in sight.
According to Pro Football Talk per a source with knowledge of the situation, there has been no contact between the Seahawks and Chancellor’s agent since Sept. 8.
Chancellor missed the entire preseason and the first week of the regular season. With the cost of Chancellor’s holdout already at $1.87 million through Week 1, the addition of another lost game check will add another $267,000 to the total, pushing the total north of $2.1 million, according to the report.
—Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton was listed as questionable for Monday night’s game against the New York Jets with a knee injury.
The team announced Hilton’s status after practice. Hilton had not practiced this week until Saturday.
Hilton injured the knee in a loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1. Colts owner Jim Irsay said after the loss that Hilton was diagnosed with a “really bad bruised” knee and the team would err on the side of caution for a few weeks.
Hilton had seven receptions for 88 yards before the injury. He signed a five-year, $65 million contract extension with the Colts before the start of the season. He led the team in 2014 with 82 receptions for 1,345 yards and seven touchdowns.
—St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher told Sirius XM Radio that rookie running back Todd Gurley will be a game-time decision for Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins.
Gurley, the No. 10 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, has been out with a knee injury. He was listed as questionable on the team’s injury report. Gurley has been out since tearing an ACL last Nov. 12 in a game against Auburn while at Georgia.
The rookie did run with the first unit at times this week in practice. During the week, Fisher would not rule out Gurley for Sunday’s game.
Tre Mason, who has been out with a hamstring injury, is expected to return. Benny Cunningham filled in as the starter in Week 1.
—The Washington Redskins promoted linebacker Terrance Plummer from the practice squad to the active roster and terminated the contract of defensive end Frank Kearse.
Kearse was a seventh-round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2011. He recorded 15 tackles and three sacks with Washington in 2014.
—The Arizona Cardinals promoted running back Kerwynn Williams from the practice squad to the active roster and released tight end Joseph Fauria.
Williams rushed for 246 yards in five games with the Cardinals last season. He was released by the team on Sept. 5 and re-signed to the practice squad the following day.
—Panthers cornerback Josh Norman was fined $8,681 by the NFL for taunting during his 30-yard interception return for a touchdown in the season opener.
Norman waved goodbye to Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles on his way to the end zone in Carolina’s 20-9 victory last Sunday. A league spokesman confirmed the fine to the Charlotte Observer on Friday.
Norman was not fined for his post-touchdown celebration during which he rode an imaginary horse before making an imaginary dismount. Last season, Norman was fined $11,000 for a uniform violation (wearing silver cleats) and $8,268 for fighting.
