NFL notebook: Luck’s status remains a mystery
The Sports Xchange
Andrew Luck saw limited practice time on Thursday and the Indianapolis Colts remain hopeful that their star quarterback can play Sunday despite an injury to his throwing shoulder.
Luck didn’t throw passes in the open media portion of the practice when his workload consisted of handoffs. But he and the Colts’ two other quarterbacks had an earlier session in the team’s indoor practice facility.
Veteran Matt Hasselbeck took most of the practice snaps and he will start against the Jacksonville Jaguars if Luck can’t play.
“I’m sure Andrew is going to try to play, and I expect Andrew to play,” Hasselbeck said. “At the same time my job is to do what I can behind the scenes and be ready. The only difference in this case is that I guess the percentages would say that I have a better chance than I normally would.”
–Philadelphia Eagles running back DeMarco Murray was a full practice participant as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
Murray missed last Sunday’s game against the New York Jets due to the ailment. Coach Chip Kelly is hopeful of having his services for this Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins.
“DeMarco was limited, but did some things. So we’ll see where he is,” Kelly told reporters. “DeMarco wants to go every week, every day. He’s a highly competitive player who wants to be there.”
Murray cited improvement after practice but he still may turn out to be a game-time decision for Washington.
–Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler isn’t ruling out the possibility that he could play against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.
Cutler suffered a hamstring injury against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 20 and missed last Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. The recovery time was expected to keep Cutler out at least two games.
Now he’s talking about possibly playing against the Raiders and missing just one game.
“We’ll see how it goes,” Cutler told reporters after Thursday’s practice. “We still have a couple of days left. We’re exactly where we want to be, but no one is really 100 percent healthy right now.”
Chicago was blanked 26-0 by the Seahawks without Cutler. Jimmy Clausen started at quarterback and will do so again versus the Raiders if Cutler can’t play.
–The New York Giants ruled out wide receiver Victor Cruz for Sunday’s game, which was expected to mark his return to the field for his first game since 2014, when he suffered a torn patellar tendon.
Cruz, who has a calf injury, was working toward Sunday’s game but coach Tom Coughlin said that he was headed for another MRI and likely another spell on the sidelines.
Cruz had a setback in his first practice in more than six weeks after initially suffering a calf strain.
–Carolina Panthers standout middle linebacker Luke Kuechly sat out practice and still hasn’t cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol.
Kuechly appears to be a near-certainty to miss Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Sitting out would represent his third consecutive missed game.
The Pro Bowler was injured in the season-opening game against Jacksonville. The Panthers have a bye in Week 5 so it has become a strong possibility that Kuechly won’t play again until Oct. 18 against the Seattle Seahawks.
–Baltimore Ravens rookie wide receiver Breshad Perriman is sidelined indefinitely after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery this week, according to a report.
Perriman, the Ravens’ first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, was injured during training camp and last week reinjured the PCL during pregame warmups before a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery, NFL.com reported Thursday.
-Paul Dunn joined the Cleveland Browns as an offensive line assistant to work under George DeLeone, the team announced.
DeLeone took over as offensive line coach after Andy Moeller, who held the position before a suspension stemming from a legal matter, left the Browns in a mutual parting.
The 55-year-old Dunn served as the Houston Texans’ offensive line coach in 2014 after six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons as an assistant offensive line coach (2008-2011) and offensive line coach (2012-13). He also held college coaching jobs as an offensive line coach at Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Kansas State and Vanderbilt.
–Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Sapp pled guilty Thursday to one charge of domestic violence, stemming from an incident in Las Vegas, according to published reports.
Two other domestic violence charges were dropped in exchange for the admission of guilt in a plea deal.
Sapp was ordered to pay $2,895 in fines and restitution, undergo six months of domestic violence counseling and perform 48 hours of community service. He also is to have no contact with former girlfriend Chalyce Moore and must stay out of trouble for at least six months.
Sapp was accused of assaulting Moore on April 28 in an incident that began at a Las Vegas resort. The altercation continued at Moore’s home where Sapp stomped on her head, according to court documents.
