NFL notebook: League seeks temporary venues in L.A.
The Sports Xchange
The NFL is researching potential temporary venues that could host a team or teams in Los Angeles for the 2016 season.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the league on Thursday began issuing proposal requests to multiple venues in Southern California — among them the Los Angeles Coliseum and Rose Bowl — with the intent of securing a temporary home in the event of a return to the market.
Chris Hardart, NFL vice president of corporate development, confirmed that the process has begun.
“It is part of the process and an effort to understand all of our options and have a well thought out plan if a team or teams were to be approved to relocate,” Hardart told the Times.
There are two Los Angeles-area new stadium proposals being considered.
The San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders have joined forces and proposed in February building a $1.7 billion NFL stadium in Carson.
In January, a developer and a company operated by St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke unveiled plans to build a $1.86 billion, 80,000-seat stadium in Inglewood on land he owns near Hollywood Park.
The Los Angeles market has been without a team since 1995, when the Rams moved to St. Louis and the Raiders returned to Oakland.
NFL owners added a special meeting set for Aug. 11 in Chicago to discuss potential plans for relocating a team to Los Angeles in 2016.
—Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, attending a youth clinic at the Cleveland Browns’ facility, plans to be himself and wouldn’t compare his off-field issues with what happened during Johnny Manziel’s disastrous rookie season.
Winston, the 2015 NFL Draft’s first overall pick, said Friday that he plans to remain active on social media in his NFL career.
“Social media can help you in so many ways from a positive standpoint,” Winston said during the Play 60 youth clinic at the Browns facility in Berea, Ohio, as part of the NFL rookie symposium being held this week in nearby Aurora. “I can’t control what people put on social media about me, but I can control my actions and what I do.”
Winston, a former Heisman Trophy winner at Florida State who had his own off-the-field issues, was asked about Manziel, also a former Heisman-winning quarterback in his second season with the Browns.
“I’m in no point to judge,” Winston said at the youth clinic conducted by the draft class of 2015 as part of the rookie symposium. “I’ve got to better myself and improve every day as a person.
“I haven’t really talked to him much, but I know he’s a great person. His heart is so big and when he gets on the field he shows out and that’s one thing I really remember from him in college. But other than that, he’s just excited for my rookie year and starting with the Bucs.”
—Defensive end Michael Sam is back in Montreal with the Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, two weeks after he left training camp for unexplained personal reasons.
The Montreal Gazette reported Friday that Sam was in Montreal on Wednesday and plans to be at team meetings this weekend before practicing Monday.
There has been no explanation for why Sam abruptly left the CFL team. The Alouettes placed Sam on their suspended list after he left.
Sam, who signed in May with the Alouettes, was the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team when he was selected in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams last year. He was released by the Rams during the preseason and later picked up and let go by the Dallas Cowboys.
—Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp is facing three counts of domestic violence in Las Vegas after an April incident involving his girlfriend.
Sapp is accused of biting Chalyce Moore and stomping on her head while the two were at the M Resort on April 28, according to a police report acquired by TMZ.
Other details in the police report include Sapp throwing a margarita at Moore during an argument at the resort. After the two left to go to Moore’s condo, Moore said Sapp bit her middle finger in the car and then stepped on her face after the two reached the condo.
Moore sustrained injuries that included bruising on her shoulders, legs, face and lower lip, according to a friend that spoke with authorities.
Sapp is scheduled for a court appearance on July 23. If convicted on the charges, he could face up to 18 months in jail.
