NFL notebook: Dolphins to sign Suh for $114 million
The Miami Dolphins are expected to sign defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to a six-year, $114 million contract that includes $60 million in guaranteed money when free agency opens Tuesday, according to ESPN.
The Dolphins and Suh’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, discussed the parameters of the deal during a 72-hour window that opened Saturday for pending unrestricted free agents to talk with teams. He is expected to earn $60 million through the first three years of the deal — surpassing the $51.8 million in guaranteed money the Houston Texans gave defensive lineman J.J. Watt as part of a six-year, $100 million deal last offseason.
The Detroit Lions opted not to place their franchise tag on Suh, which would have cost the team $26.9 million, setting him up to become the prize of the 2015 free agent class.
–Free-agent running back Frank Gore and free-agent cornerback Byron Maxwell apparently are headed to the Philadelphia Eagles, according to ESPN.
Unless there is an unexpected snag in negotiations, Gore, 32, will sign a three-year deal with the Eagles, with $7.5 million in the first two years guaranteed. He has rushed for over 1,100 yards in each of his past four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.
Cornerback Byron Maxwell told ESPN’s Josina Anderson, “I’m going to Philly.”
The Eagles were competing with the Seattle Seahawks, who had been making a late bid to bring Maxwell, 27, back to Seattle.
—The San Francisco 49ers may land free-agent wide receiver Torrey Smith, who played last season for the Baltimore Ravens.
The Baltimore Sun reported the 49ers are the front-runners for Smith, who had 49 receptions for 767 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Ravens in 2014.
—The Buffalo Bills and running back LeSean McCoy have agreed to a five-year contract. The deal includes $26.5 million in guaranteed money, agent Drew Rosenhaus told ProFootballTalk.com.
The deal will start once McCoy is officially traded to the Bills by the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday. The deal will add two years to McCoy’s existing contract, and includes an increase in base salary for 2015 from $10 million to $16 million. He will earn $21.05 million over the next two years.
—The San Diego Chargers reached agreement with impending free agent cornerback Brandon Flowers on a four-year, $36 million contract, according to multiple reports.
Flowers, 29, signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Chargers in June, and he performed well in his first season with San Diego.
–Running back Chris Johnson was shot in the shoulder in a drive-by shooting Sunday morning in Orlando, Fla., that left one man dead and another injured, according to reports.
Johnson was hospitalized but is in stable condition and expected to recover.
Chris Johnson, an Orlando native, played this past season with the New York Jets. The Jets last month declined to exercise an option to retain Johnson, who signed a two-year, $8 million contract after being released by the Tennessee Titans last year.
–The Indianapolis Colts agreed to terms with free agent guard Todd Herremans.
Terms were not disclosed but a source told ESPN that Herremans, 32, received a one-year deal that could be worth as much as $3.5 million.
The Philadelphia Eagles released the 6-foot-6, 321-pound Herremans on Feb. 27 after 10 seasons.
—The Houston Texans are reportedly interested in quarterback Brian Hoyer as a target when free agency starts Tuesday.
NFL Media’s Jeff Darlington reported the Texans are “zeroing in” on the veteran as a top quarterback target. Hoyer will become an unrestricted free agent after playing 2014 with the Cleveland Browns.
—The Green Bay Packers agreed to a one-year deal with backup quarterback Scott Tolzien, according to reports.
The deal is worth a reported $1.375 million for last season’s third-string quarterback.
