NFL notebook: DE Allen traded to Panthers
The Sports Xchange
Defensive end Jared Allen was traded to the Carolina Panthers from the Chicago Bears, who receive a conditional draft pick in return.
The teams agreed to the deal Monday pending Allen’s physical.
Allen leads the NFL with 134 sacks since 2004 and played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings before signing with the Bears prior to the 2014 season.
Allen gives the Panthers a pass-rushing end with Charles Johnson (hamstring) expected to miss at least one week.
Allen moved to outside linebacker this spring in the Bears’ transition to a 3-4 defense under coach John Fox.
–Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the team will be without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger indefinitely with a torn medical collateral ligament in his left knee.
The typical recovery time from the injury, provided there is no peripheral damage beyond a minor bone bruise, is 4-6 weeks. Some players have returned in less than one month.
Tomlin said he was pleased with quarterback Michael Vick, who filled in for Roethlisberger and steered the Steelers to a 12-9 win in St. Louis. Vick will start Thursday’s game against Baltimore.
–New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who missed Sunday’s game with a bruised rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder, said he is optimistic he will play in Week 4 against the Dallas Cowboys.
Head coach Sean Payton said the Saints are encouraged by daily progress made by Brees.
—NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said he trusts Ed Hochuli’s version of events after Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton claimed he was told by the veteran referee that he wasn’t old enough to draw a personal-foul flag.
Newton thought a penalty could have been called early in the fourth quarter when he was hit hard near the out-of-bounds marker by defensive tackle Tyeler Davison after throwing an incompletion in Sunday’s 27-22 victory over the New Orleans Saints.
Newton, 26, said Hochuli told him, “You’re not old enough to get that call.”
Blandino said he talked with Hochuli, who denied uttering those words.
–The Philadelphia Eagles brought in kickers for tryouts after Cody Parkey aggravated a preseason groin injury, and Caleb Sturgis wound up with the job, according to NFL.com.
Sturgis was the kicker in Miami the last two seasons, but lost his job to Andrew Franks this summer.
–Safety Dion Bailey, who was dropped from the Seattle Seahawks roster over the weekend when Kam Chancellor was activated, was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets, FOX sports reported.
