NFL notebook: Colts sign QB Johnson with Luck questionable

The Indianapolis Colts signed quarterback Josh Johnson on Friday after starter Andrew Luck saw limited practice time with an injury to his throwing shoulder.

Head coach Chuck Pagano said Friday that Luck is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, Pagano remains confident Luck will start Sunday.

“Absolutely … It’s Andrew Luck. If anyone can play, it’s Andrew.” Pagano said.

Luck also was listed as questionable on the Colts’ injury report Thursday. He was limited both Wednesday and Thursday, and was not out with the other quarterbacks at the start of practice Friday.

If Luck can’t go, the Colts would start 40-year-old Matt Hasselbeck, who hasn’t started a game since Nov. 4, 2012.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Johnson most recently spent time in training camp with the New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals this year. He has played in 29 games (five starts) and completed 96 of 177 passes for 1,042 yards with five touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

The Colts also waived cornerback Shaun Prater.

—Quarterback Jay Cutler is officially questionable for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders, but rushing back from a hamstring injury could be risky.

That’s because left tackle Jermon Bushrod is out with head and shoulder injuries.

Cutler strained his hamstring trying to track down Arizona Cardinals defensive back Tony Jefferson after throwing an interception in a Week 2 loss at Soldier Field.

Cutler didn’t play last week, giving way to Jimmy Clausen in a shutout loss at Seattle. Cutler was a limited participant in practice Wednesday and Thursday but coach John Fox insists the two-week recovery time reported by multiple media outlets was merely a guess. Fox said Cutler’s muscle strain is “nothing serious.”

—Wide receiver Eric Decker was listed as questionable by the New York Jets with a knee injury that sidelined him last week.

Decker took part in limited practice for the third consecutive day Friday as the Jets prepared for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins in London.

Running back Chris Ivory, who sat out last week’s game with a quadricep injury, is listed as probable and expected to play.

—Dolphins left tackle Branden Albert is expected to miss his second consecutive game with a hamstring injury.

Albert traveled with the team to London after sitting out last week’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, but was officially listed as doubtful after taking part in only limited practice Friday.

The Dolphins also listed tight end Jordan Cameron (groin) and running back Jonas Gray (calf) as questionable. Tight end Dion Sims will not play as he continues to go through the league’s concussion protocol.

—Sunday’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins is still scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff, despite a possible threat from Hurricane Joaquin.

The NFL stated Friday that there is no current plan to change the start time, postpone the game or move the game slated to be played at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

The NFL released a statement to address the situation:

“Our primary concern as it relates to Hurricane Joaquin is the safety of the public, including our fans and clubs. Based on the storm’s current trajectory and the lifting by Governor (Larry) Hogan of the state of emergency in eight Maryland counties, including Montgomery and Prince George’s County (where FedEx Field is located), we expect to play Sunday’s Philadelphia at Washington game as scheduled on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

“The governor’s office has assured us that based on the current forecast playing the game would have no adverse effect on public safety. We will continue to monitor the storm, stay in contact with the governor’s office and other public authorities, and be prepared to adjust the schedule if necessary should the forecast change.”

—The Eagles listed running back DeMarco Murray as questionable for Sunday’s game at Washington with a hamstring injury that sidelined him last week.

If Murray cannot play, it will mean increased snaps again for Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles.

—The Atlanta Falcons will be without running back Tevin Coleman for a second consecutive week as the rookie continues to recover from a cracked rib.

Coleman did not practice again Friday and was ruled out for Sunday’s home game against the Houston Texans, along with tight end Jacob Tamme (concussion), safety Ricardo Allen (knee) and wide receiver Devin Hester (toe).

Devonta Freeman, who will start again in place of Coleman, was listed as probable with a toe injury along with wide receiver Julio Jones (toe, hamstring) and linebacker Brooks Reed (groin).

—The San Francisco 49ers are likely to be without tight end Vernon Davis for Sunday’s home game against the Green Bay Packers.

Davis was officially listed as doubtful with a sore knee. Coach Jim Tomsula expected Davis to practice Friday, but he was unable to take part.

Running back Reggie Bush (calf) practiced again Friday and is listed as probable. Bush is expected to play for the first time since the season opener, and could be used on punt returns as well.

—Packers wide receiver Davante Adams is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game with an ankle injury, which could pave the way for more playing time for rookie Ty Montgomery as the third receiver behind Randall Cobb and James Jones.

Cobb leads the Packers with 20 receptions, followed by Jones (12) and Adams (nine). Tight end Richard Rodgers has eight receptions and Montgomery caught two of his six receptions on the season after Adams left last week’s game early.

—The Pittsburgh Steelers are planning to try out kickers after Josh Scobee missed two fourth quarter-field goals in Thursday night’s overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Former Washington Redskins kicker Kai Forbath will try out in Pittsburgh, according to CSNMidAtlantic.com, and free agent Chris Boswell, who was with the New York Giants in training camp, will also try out, according to NFL.com.

Forbath had been in Washington since 2012 but was cut after missing a field goal in Week 1 this season.

Scobee missed two field-goal tries Thursday night — pulling both wide left — in the last 2:24 of the fourth quarter from 49 and 41 yards. Then in overtime, the Steelers drove to the Baltimore 33-yard line on their second possession but head coach Mike Tomlin decided against trying a game-winning field-goal attempt by Scobee on fourth-and-1 with what would have been a 50-yard kick.

Quarterback Michael Vick threw incomplete on fourth down to give the ball back to the Ravens, who erased a 13-point, second-half deficit.

Scobee’s counterpart, Justin Tucker, made his third field goal of the game, a 52-yarder with 5:08 remaining in overtime, to give the Ravens their first win of the season, 23-20 over the Steelers.

Scobee said after the game that he would have welcomed the chance at redemption.

“Oh yeah, absolutely,” Scobee said. “I wanted to redeem myself, but I didn’t get it. I understand it. I just have to move on.”

—Houston Texans running back Arian Foster is a game-time decision and could make his season debut in Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Foster (groin) was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report but coach Bill O’Brien indicated the decision will be made shortly before kickoff. Foster was injured on Aug. 3 during a training-camp practice.

—The San Diego Chargers could be missing as many as four starting offensive linemen when they meet the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Left guard Orlando Franklin (ankle) has been ruled out and left tackle King Dunlap (concussion) and center Chris Watt (groin) were classified as doubtful on Friday’s injury report. Right guard D.J. Fluker (ankle) is questionable.

—The Buffalo Bills will be without running back LeSean McCoy and receiver Sammy Watkins when they play the New York Giants on Sunday.

Both players were ruled out by the club on Friday. McCoy is bothered by a hamstring injury and Watkins will sit with a calf injury.

McCoy has been ailing for more than a month and he vowed not to return until he is fully healthy. Even if that means he misses multiple games.

Buffalo promoted running back Cierre Wood from the practice squad to the 53-man roster and released defensive tackle Andre Fluellen.

—Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers with knee/quad injuries, although he did return to limited practice Friday.

If Martin cannot play, Charles Sims and Bobby Rainey would share the backfield duty. Martin banged his knee in practice Wednesday, but said he expects to play against Carolina.

—Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly is out for Sunday’s game, his third in a row sitting while recovering from a head injury.

Kuechly gets next week off — Carolina’s bye week — but is likely to return for Week 6.

A.J. Klein will make another start at middle linebacker in the spot of Kuechly, who was concussed Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and hasn’t played or practiced since then.

—New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said he plans for quarterback Drew Brees to play Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

Brees sat out last Sunday’s 27-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers with a bruised rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder, missing the first game because of injury in his 10-year career with the Saints.

Payton is convinced Brees would be able to play after watching him throw in practice this week.

—The Denver Broncos are down to their third-string left tackle for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Rookie tackle Ty Sambrailo played through a shoulder injury at Detroit on Sunday night but missed another practice Friday and was officially ruled out by coach Gary Kubiak.

Kubiak said veteran Ryan Harris will flip sides to start in Sambrailo’s place, with rookie Michael Schofield starting at right tackle.

—The Vikings ruled wide receiver Charles Johnson out for Sunday’s game at Denver due to a rib injury.

With Jarius Wright questionable due to a hand injury, Adam Thielen and Cordarrelle Patterson could figure heavily into the offensive gameplan.

Wright took part in limited practice Friday.

—The Arizona Cardinals placed tight end Joseph Fauria (knee) on the practice squad injured list and re-signed tight end Brandon Bostick to the practice squad.
