NFL notebook: Browns GM Farmer suspended four games
Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer has been suspended four games for texting coaches during games in 2014 and the team has been fined $250,000.
The NFL announced Monday that Farmer will be suspended without pay for the team’s first four games of 2015. The Browns will not lose any draft picks, according to NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent.
Farmer will be permitted to stay in his current capacity through the rest of the offseason, including working the NFL draft and being involved when the Browns cut down to their 53-player roster.
During his suspension, Farmer can’t be involved in any team matters and is not permitted to be at the team’s facilities or games.
“There was no evidence in the NFL’s review that Browns ownership or any other team executives had knowledge of the prohibited conduct. Once the violation was discovered, Browns management implemented new processes to ensure future compliance,” the NFL said in its statement.
—The Atlanta Falcons have been fined $350,000 and will lose a 2016 draft pick for pumping artificial crowd noise into the Georgia Dome over the last two seasons.
The NFL announced Monday that the Falcons will lose a fifth-round pick in next year’s draft. If the Falcons have multiple picks in the fifth round, they will lose the highest of those selections.
In addition, Falcons president Rich McKay will be suspended from the league’s competition committee from April 1 through at least June 30 for failing to ensure that the franchise complied with league rules.
“What took place was wrong and nowhere near the standards by which we run our business,” Falcons owner Arthur Blank said in a statement Monday. “Anytime there are actions that compromise the integrity of the NFL or threaten the culture of our franchise, as this issue did, they will be dealt with swiftly and strongly.”
—The Philadelphia Eagles came to agreement on a one-year deal for wide receiver Miles Austin and signed linebacker DeMeco Ryans to a one-year contract extension.
Austin’s deal is worth $2.3 million, with $700,000 more available in incentives, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.
Austin, 30, caught 47 passes for 568 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games with the Cleveland Browns in 2014. He missed the final five games after suffering a kidney injury.
Ryans was due to make $6.9 million in 2015, the final year of his previous deal, and the added year is expected to lower his salary cap number.
Ryans, 30, is coming off an Achilles injury that ended his 2014 season in November.
—The Green Bay Packers agreed to bring back defensive linemen Letroy Guion and B.J. Raji on one-year contracts.
Guion’s deal comes three days after he visited the Seattle Seahawks.
Guion, 27, was arrested on Feb. 3 in his hometown of Starke, Fla., for felony possession of marijuana and a firearm. His legal case was eventually resolved in conjunction with a no contest plea and a $5,000 fine. Guion still could face disciplinary action from the NFL.
Guion started every game for the Packers last season, posting career highs in tackles (32) and sacks (3.5).
Raji, the Packers’ first-round pick in 2009, missed the 2014 season with a torn biceps.
—Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas is working out in Atlanta and will not attend the team’s offseason program.
Thomas, who was designated as the Broncos’ franchise player earlier this month, also said he will not take part in the annual workouts at Duke University with quarterback Peyton Manning and the team’s other wide receivers.
The Broncos, who open their offseason program on April 13, have been working on a long-term deal with Thomas’ representatives.
Thomas spoke to ESPN.com by phone Monday from an XBox/”Call of Duty” event to benefit veterans in Los Angeles.
“I’ll be back in Georgia, trying to get the body right, get the ankle right,” Thomas told ESPN when asked about the Broncos’ offseason program and the workouts at Duke. “Then when it’s time to go, make sure I’m 100 percent ready to go.”
—The Oakland Raiders have re-signed defensive lineman C.J. Wilson.
The team did not reveal terms, but Wilson reportedly agreed last week to a two-year deal worth $4.6 million.
A seventh-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2010, Wilson joined the Raiders last year and tallied 34 tackles and two sacks in 16 games, including seven starts.
—The Washington Redskins signed running back Michael Hill.
The 5-foot-10, 210-pound back spent the last month of the 2014 season on Washington’s practice squad.
An undrafted free agent out of Missouri Western State in 2013, Hill played in eight games in 2013 — two with the Green Bay Packers and six with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Last season, Hill had stints on the practice squads of the Packers and Indianapolis Colts. The Redskins added him to their practice unit Dec. 9.
—The Carolina Panthers signed running back Jordan Todman to a one-year contract.
Todman, who spent the past three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, provides veteran depth to the backfield. Jonathan Stewart will enter the 2015 season as the unquestioned lead back following the release of DeAngelo Williams. Darrin Reaves, Fozzy Whittaker and short-yardage back Mike Tolbert are also on the roster.
Todman was a sixth-round pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2011, and also spent time with the Minnesota Vikings before landing in Jacksonville. He became a free agent when the Jaguars declined to tender him a contract by the March 6 deadline.
