Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White, the seventh overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, needs to undergo surgery on a stress fracture in his left shin.

General manager Ryan Pace said Saturday that White will start the season on the physically unable to perform list and could miss the entire season. By remaining on the PUP list, White will be sidelined for at least the first six games of the regular season.

“He’s emotional,” Pace said of White. “I know he sincerely cares about this organization, about his teammates, about Coach (John) Fox. It’s from the bottom of his heart, and that’s why, to me — and I know, this is kind of a weird time to say this — but man, I’m telling you, that guy, it’s confirmed to me the type of person he is, through this process.”

White suffered the injury during the Bears’ offseason program and missed training camp practices as well as the Bears’ preseason opener.

Pace said White suffered a setback in his recovery this week, prompting the need for surgery. White had been limited to pool and elliptical work until Monday, when the team allowed him to lightly run on a side field during practice.

—The Washington Redskins lost another tight end for the season as Logan Paulsen will have surgery Monday to repair a turf toe condition, head coach Jay Gruden announced.

Paulsen suffered the injury in practice last week and traveled on Tuesday to meet with the specialist.

The news comes two days after starting tight end Niles Paul broke his ankle in Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.

Gruden also confirmed that running back Silas Redd is out for the season with a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee.

—The lawyers for Tom Brady claim there is a “smear campaign” by the NFL against the New England Patriots star quarterback in the fight over the Deflategate scandal.

Brady’s attorneys on Friday reiterated their claims of unfair treatment by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as they seek to overturn Brady’s four-game suspension for his alleged involvement in the deflation of game balls during the AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts in January.

Jeffrey Kessler, the lead attorney for Brady and the NFL Players Association, referred to Goodell’s written ruling against Brady as a “propaganda piece” in documents filed Friday in U.S. District Court, according to ESPN.com.

Kessler said Brady was judged by a different standard from when he was first suspended to when his appeal was upheld.

The Ted Wells report said Brady was “generally aware” of the deflating of footballs, but Kessler said the league then asserted Brady was the mastermind of the scheme.

“It is more smear campaign than reasoned decision,” Kessler wrote, according to the Boston Herald, in a court document asking federal Judge Richard M. Berman to vacate Brady’s suspension.

—Tight end Julius Thomas and safety Johnathan Cyprien of the Jacksonville Jaguars will be out for the rest of the preseason.

Coach Gus Bradley said Cyprien will be sidelined because of a broken finger on right hand. That news came a few hours after Thomas broke a bone in the back of his right hand in the preseason opener against Pittsburgh on Friday night.

Bradley expects both to be ready for the season opener on Sept. 13 against Carolina.

Thomas has a stable fracture in the back of his right hand, near the middle finger. He was placed in a cast and will be limited to walkthrough practices the next few weeks.

Cyprien has a non-displaced fracture in his right index finger, but will not need surgery. His hand was placed in a cast and will be able to do some practice work.”

—Running back C.J. Spiller of the New Orleans Saints underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Friday, but is expected to be back for the regular season, ESPN reported.

The surgery took place in Pensacola, Fla., according to sources.

Spiller did not play in the Saints’ preseason opener on Thursday against the Baltimore Ravens.

—The Miami Dolphins re-signed free agent wide receiver Tyler McDonald and waived/injured wide receiver Tommy Streeter.

The 6-foot-3, 202-pound McDonald rejoins Miami after being waived on Aug. 11. He initially signed with the Dolphins on Jan. 5.

—The Bears signed wide receiver Jeremy Kelley to a one-year contract and waived linebacker DeDe Lattimore.
