NFL notebook: Agent confident Giants will extend Manning’s contract

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, entering the final season of his contract, may not be concerned about an extension but his agent is confident a deal will get done.

Agent Tom Condon said negotiations with the Giants will begin soon on what likely will be Manning’s final NFL contract.

“It’s an extraordinarily hard position to fill, as you know,” Condon told the New York Daily News. “You actually have some leverage with the quarterbacks. The only problem is there’s a salary cap. But let’s face it, sooner or later …”

Condon didn’t finish the sentence, but he knows today’s going rate for elite quarterbacks as he represents seven of the NFL’s 32 starting quarterbacks.

Five of those quarterbacks make an average of at least $17 million per year.

“The quarterbacks always get done,” Condon said. “And the Giants are not a skittish team. So it’s not one of those things where they get nervous or they jump around or anything like that. You know you’re going to go in and it’s going to get done. I’m sure at the appropriate time it’ll happen.”

The 34-year-old Manning, with two Super Bowl rings, surpassed 4,000 passing yards in four of the last six seasons. He has never missed an NFL game.

Manning bounced back from a poor 2013 season to complete a career-high 63.1 percent of his passes in 2014, with 4,410 yards and 30 touchdowns against 14 interceptions.

—Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has assumed a leadership role with two of his teammates during summer workouts until the start of training camp.

Peterson brought wide receiver Mike Wallace and running back Jerick McKinnon with him to Houston for workouts with his longtime personal trainer.

Peterson has always shown up to camp in top shape because of intense offseason workouts with trainer James Cooper.

“(It’s) a lot of strength work as well,” Peterson told ESPN.com. “I do so much different stuff, whether it’s track workouts, on the field, hill workouts, running three miles, exercise with the full-body workout. Whatever the trainer throws out there in front of us, it’s a challenge. I’m always trying to accomplish that challenge.”

Peterson tweeted out a photo of the group, which went through a four-hour workout on Thursday running hills, cutting in a sand pit and lifting weights.

Peterson buried months of bitterness directed at the Vikings and showed up for two weeks of voluntary organized team activities and the mandatory minicamp.

—New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford has taken some verbal shots at the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterbacks, even comparing them to automobiles.

Weatherford, appearing on the “Boomer and Carton Show” on WFAN, shared his opinions about Sam Bradford, Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.

“I’m gonna give you a Ferrari (Bradford) that maybe won’t be running all the time, or I’m giving you a nice Cadillac sedan (Sanchez),” Weatherford said Friday during the radio interview. “It’s not the fastest but you know what you’re going to get out of it. Bradford can go from zero to 60 in three seconds, but you don’t know if he’s gonna start up some days.”

Bradford, acquired in a trade for Nick Foles from the St. Louis Rams, is recovering from a second surgery in as many years to repair a torn knee ligament. Sanchez said he was promised a chance to compete for the No. 1 job when he opted to return to the Eagles, signing a two-year deal as an unrestricted free agent in March. Tebow, who signed this offseason, will be battling for a roster spot with Matt Barkley for the third-string job after being out of the NFL for the past two seasons.

Weatherford, in his fourth season with the Giants, saved his most blunt assessment for Tebow.

“I’m the biggest Tim Tebow fan in the world,” Weatherford said. “I mean, who wouldn’t want their daughter to date a guy like that? I’ll tell you what, I don’t want him taking snaps for my team.”
