NFL notebook: 49ers GM praises OLB Smith’s offseason work ethic

San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith appears to be motivated to bounce back after a disappointing season in 2014.

At least 49ers general manager Trent Baalke hopes so, saying Smith is “hungry” this offseason.

After serving a nine-game suspension a year ago for violating the NFL’s personal-conduct and substance-abuse policy, Smith returned and finished with a career-low two sacks.

“He has been here for everything,” Baalke told reporters at Levi’s Stadium on Friday, referring to the team’s voluntary offseason workout program.

Smith restructured his contract in March to turn his $9,754,000 salary for 2015 into a series of bonuses, with a base salary of $1 million.

Smith had 14, 19.5 and 8.5 sacks in his first three seasons, respectively.

“He’s got a great look in his eye,” Baalke said of Smith’s mindset this offseason. “He’s doing well. … For anybody that’s been in a situation like Aldon’s been in, every day is a process. But he’s doing exceptionally well and he’s probably in as good a shape as he’s been in a long time.”

—The Jacksonville Jaguars signed free agent center Stefen Wisniewski on Saturday.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but the Florida Times-Union reported the deal is for one year and worth $2.5 million.

The 6-foot-3, 307-pound Wisniewski was a second-round selection by the Oakland Raiders in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Penn State. He started all four seasons with the Raiders, starting 16 games as a rookie and 16 games this past season. He started 15 games in 2012 and 14 in 2013.

—Running back Todd Gurley of Georgia, who sustained a torn ACL in his left knee last season and underwent surgery in November, reportedly is healthy ahead of the NFL Draft.

Gurley, who is considered to be the top running back available by many draft experts, had the knee examined in Indianapolis and no problems were found, according to NFL Network.

Gurley’s goal has been to be ready for training camp with the team that drafts him, and he appears to be on track for that with his rehab schedule going according to plan.
