NFL Fun Stats – Week 5
Is running the football the new, old trend in the NFL?
NFL Fun Stats is put together to provide a wide range of number-oriented morsels for those who crave the delicacy and geek-dom of NFL statistics, news and notes. If you’re not quoting one note each week, I’m not doing my job. Here are your water cooler nuggets.

Running backs in the NFL in Week 4 had at least 100 yards rushing in a single game. In Week 3 there were eight running backs that accomplished the same feat. In the first two weeks of the 2015 season, the NFL had only eight games with a 100-yard rusher. The last two weeks have nearly doubled that total. Needless to say it appears teams are finding a rhythm pounding the rock.
104.7
Yards per game is the average by New York Jets running back Chris Ivory this year. He is the only back in the NFL to average over 100 yards per game. He ranks third in the NFL with 314 rushing yards this season.
5
Touchdown receptions by Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald leads the entire league in the category. The 32-year old veteran receiver accumulated the total over a two week stretch (Week 2 and Week 3), which is an anomaly. The combined five touchdowns passes are the most over a two week stretch in his entire 12-year career. What took Fitzgerald two weeks to accomplish this season previously took him 21 games to reach the same total of five touchdown receptions.
6.2
Are the average yards per carry by St. Louis Rams rookie running back Todd Gurley (which currently leads the league). He unleashed his talent on the Arizona Cardinals last weekend by rushing the football 19 times for 146 yards (7.6 yards per carry) in his second game in the NFL. His first NFL game had an extremely different result as he carried the football six times for nine yards (1.5 yards per carry). Hopefully for the sake of Gurley and the Rams, the Week 4 performance is a sign of more big games to come.
4
Is the magic number that leads the NFL in a couple important categories. Four fumbles by Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel leads the league and four interceptions by Carolina Panthers Josh Norman also lead the league.

Team and one team alone ranks in the top five overall in total offense and defense. The Arizona Cardinals appear to be the most dominant team on both sides of the football. Offensively, the team ranks fourth-overall gaining 405.0 yards per game and they allow the fifth-fewest amount of yards (306.8).
11-9
Is the overall record of the top five defenses against the pass in the NFL. The list includes the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks. Ironically, the exact same overall record (11-9) exists amongst the top five over defenses against the run as well. The list of those run stuffing teams includes the New York Giants, Washington Redskins, Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons.

Combined touchdown passes by Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (11) and Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer are more than the six other teams combined. Those teams are the Chicago Bears (4), Kansas City Chiefs (4), New Orleans Saints (4), Washington Redskins (4), Minnesota Vikings (2) and San Francisco 49ers (2); Which equal 20 touchdown passes.
0
Rushing touchdowns by the Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins after four weeks of play in the National Football League. No one connects the Dolphins and Jaguars with potent ground and pound football, but the reality that after four games the Seahawks remain shut out of the end zone via the run game is a bit shocking to say the very least.
