NFL Fun Stats – Week 4
A look at some number-oriented morsels for those who crave the delicacy and geek-dom of NFL statistics.
NFL fun stats is put together to provide a wide range of number-oriented morsels for those who crave the delicacy and geek-dom of NFL statistics, news and notes. If you’re not quoting one note each week, I’m not doing my job. Here are your water cooler nuggets.
1
– Is the amount of wins by starting rookie quarterbacks this season. Teddy Bridgewater is the first to earn a victory leading the Minnesota Vikings over the Atlanta Falcons 41-28. Jacksonville Jaguars Blake Bortles and Oakland Raiders Derek Carr are 0-4 overall starting under center.
2
– Is the number of touchdowns scored by the New England Patriots first-team offense over the last two games. The offense averaged 34.8 points per game in 2012 and 27.7 in 2013. New England is averaging 20 points per game in 2014 showing a drastic decline from over the last three seasons.
3
– Is the total number of yards rushing by eight players in Week Four. Nick Foles, Dexter McCluster, Mike Wallace, Andrew Luck, Maurice Jones-Drew, Tauren Poole, Jamize Olawale and Travaris Cadet combined for three yards rushing on ten carries.
4
– Losses by the Oakland Raiders with no wins. The loss in London to the Miami Dolphins 38-14 cost Dennis Allen his job after 36 games. Jacksonville shares the same dubious claim of being winless, but Gus Bradley’s job appears to be safe.
5
– Is the number of touchdowns scored by New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning against the Washington Redskins. Manning threw four touchdown passes and ran for one score, in the 45-14 blowout. It’s the eighth-time time in his career throwing four touchdown passes in one game, but first time with five touchdowns overall.
26
– Points or more have been scored upon the Pittsburgh Steelers in three of the teams four games. The defense surrendered 26 points or more last year six times. They’re half-way to that total with 12 games left. Defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau will have his hands full trying to get this defense up to the level expected in Pittsburgh.
5
– Straight games won last year after the San Francisco 49ers lost two in a row. Can they duplicate it again this year? Losers of two in a row, San Francisco beat the Philadelphia Eagles 26-21 to halt the slide. Funny thing to know is after they won five straight, they lost two more in a row and then went on to win eight straight games including two playoff wins.
0
– Are the amount of games the New England Patriots lost at home last season. Plenty of people want to write off New England this weekend with the undefeated Cincinnati Bengals heading to Foxboro Sunday night. I have bad news for the folks who don’t like Bill Belichick: Cincinnati went 11-5 last season and but all five defeats came on the road. New England is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings against Cincinnati and were winners of the last four.
96
– Points have been allowed by the Carolina Panthers’ defense after four games. Compared to last year at this point they allowed 58 total points in four games that included one shutout. The defense has given up back-to-back 30-plus point games totaling 75 points. Only once in all of 2013 did the Panthers allow 30 points or more. Is defensive end Greg Hardy that good? He’s on the NFL’s commissioner exempt list until his domestic violence case is resolved.
