NFL: Broncos’ Thomas can expect fine for chop block
The NFL said Monday that officials in the Denver-Arizona game Sunday made the “correct” when Broncos tight end Julius Thomas was penalized for chop blocking Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell.
NFL spokesman Michael Signora said Thomas is expected to be fined by the league in the coming days.
Campbell suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain and is likely to miss at least a month with a knee injury.
Thomas, who was assigned a chip block on Campbell, instead hit him with his right shoulder directly on the right knee coming off the snap.
Officials threw a penalty flag on the play, nullifying a 77-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas.
Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said the block was “the dirtiest play I’ve seen in 37 years.”
Arizona also lost quarterback Drew Stanton (concussion) and cornerback Patrick Peterson limped off the field with an apparent ankle or foot injury.
“They’ll fine the guy, but what do we get? We don’t get anything,” Arians said. “We lose our guy for two to three weeks, maybe four.”
