NFL AM: Shady Says Kelly Wants to be Philly’s Biggest Star
McCoy claims Chip Kelly doesn’t like star players; Thomas says Manziel must regain trust; Tynes sues Buccaneers
LeSean McCoy claims Chip Kelly wants to be the star in Philly
Shady McCoy threw some shade at former head coach Chip Kelly on Monday.
“I don’t think he likes or respects the stars,” the erstwhile Eagle running back told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I think he likes the fact it’s ‘Chip Kelly and the Eagles.’”
McCoy, who was working out for the first time with his new team, the Bills, seems to think Kelly doesn’t want to be overshadowed by stars such as himself or DeSean Jackson.
“It was ‘DeSean Jackson – a high-flying, take-off-the-top-of-the-defense receiver.’ Or ‘The quick, elusive LeSean McCoy,’” McCoy said. “I don’t think [Kelly] likes that.”
We would be remiss to point out “NFL leading rusher DeMarco Murray” is a player who runs counter to McCoy’s logic here. But he wasn’t done talking about his time in Philly.
McCoy also told the NFL Network that the Bills have more of an NFL atmosphere than the Eagles did.
“Being with Coach (Andy) Reid for so long … you get used to that. A player’s coach. An NFL type of atmosphere in the locker room and around the facility,” McCoy said. “And for two years in Philly it wasn’t like that as much. Not in a negative way, but it was different. It was more like a college feel.”
Kelly hasn’t yet had a chance to respond to McCoy’s sentiments.
It certainly sounds like Shady is happy to be out of Philly, though it may just be a case of the rationalization that occurs when anyone attempts to talk themselves into believing they won their breakup.
Joe Thomas says Manziel must regain team’s trust
Johnny Manziel’s stint in rehab is almost through, but his battle to regain the trust of his teammates is just beginning.
Veteran offensive lineman Joe Thomas told ESPN Cleveland that Manziel has a long way to go to win the locker room back.
“You know, I think he lost probably a lot of trust among the guys on the team last year by the way he handled himself once he became the starter,” Thomas said. “And I think he had a lot of time to reflect, I’m guessing, after the season was over by the comments he made in the media and by his actions, checking himself into rehab. … I think those were really positive steps.”
Thomas does have an air of optimism that Johnny Football can be the face of the Browns at some point.
“I’m hoping when we come back in April, we see a new Johnny and everybody’s blown away with his commitment,” Thomas said. “And I think he’s got the talent, so it’s just a matter of if he commits himself to it, we can have a really good quarterback on our hands.”
Former kicker Tynes suing Buccaneers
The Buccaneers ship continues to take on water.
Former kicker Lawrence Tynes is suing the team for $20 million in lost earnings, claiming that unsanitary conditions in the team’s facility caused his career-ending staph infection.
Tynes was signed by Tampa in 2013, but never played for the team after contracting Staphylococcus aureus in training camp. His lawsuit claims that the team was aware that MRSA was a common problem in their facility and did not take the necessary precautions to prevent it from spreading.
The infection was in Tynes’ toe, and the three surgeries that it took to save it have left him unable to kick since. His lawyer is basing the monetary value of the lawsuit on the estimation that Tynes would have played 7-8 more seasons if not for the infection.
Bucs guard Carl Nicks also contracted MRSA during the 2013 training camp and has not played since.
The Bucs, naturally, have yet to comment on the matter.
