NFL AM: Packers’ Rodgers Brilliant Again, Best Ever?
Aaron Rodgers is becoming legendary; Alex Smith stays mediocre; The Bears are selling off assets.
Packers Dominate Chiefs, 38-28
It’s time that we begin talking about Aaron Rodgers, not just as the best quarterback in the NFL, but as one of the best ever.
Rodgers shredded the stout Kansas City defense on Monday night to the tune of 24 for 35 passing, for 333 yards and five touchdowns. He didn’t throw an interception for an NFL record 19th consecutive game at home.
“Aaron is a phenomenal player … and playing great football,” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said with a laugh. “I’ll just keep saying it.
“His ability to really process information is as good as I’ve ever been around.”
We are witnessing greatness at the quarterback position, perhaps to a level that we’ve never seen before. Rodgers has mastered every aspect of playing the position. His footwork is perfect, he can diagnose defenses as good as anyone ever and he has the requisite arm strength to make every throw with pinpoint accuracy.
After three straight wins to open the season, the Packers appear to be rolling, despite all of their offensive injuries.
Meanwhile On The Chiefs Sideline…
With their collapse against the Denver Broncos last week, Kansas City finds themselves at 1-2 and tied for last place in the AFC West. Although the Chiefs can still bounce back from this, you get the feeling that they’re wasting time with a good defense.
Quarterback Alex Smith simply isn’t good enough to get the Chiefs where they want to go. He is incapable of pushing the ball down the field and with Monday’s loss, Smith has a 1-31 record when his team is trailing by 14 or more points.
Smith not only doesn’t elevate the play of his weapons, but he actually nullifies them.
Former Chiefs kicker Lawrence Tynes weighed in via his Twitter account during the game.
The guy completed 1 pass to a WR in our 2012 NFC Championship game. Signing Maclin is like getting a Porsche when you live on a gravel road

I am a @chiefs fan that's why I'm mad. This is a good team. Maclin, Kelce, Charles. Are you kidding me. Any QB in the league would take them

The Chiefs are heading for more December and January disappointment until they get better at the quarterback position.
Bears Begin Fire Sale
In a move that makes sense for all parties involved, the Chicago Bears dealt defensive end/linebacker Jared Allen to the Carolina Panthers for a sixth-round pick.
“We had some depth at the linebacker position and were able to reach an agreement with the Panthers to bring a 2016 draft pick to our team in exchange for Jared Allen,” Bears G.M. Ryan Pace said in a statement issued Monday. “Whether it is acquiring additional picks or signing players, we will continue to be aggressive in finding ways to improve our football team. We appreciate Jared’s contributions and wish him the best in Carolina.”
Allen is clearly on the last legs of his great career, but he gets to be part of a winner for possibly the last time before retirement. With the loss of Greg Hardy in free agency and Frank Alexander out for the season, as well as an injury to Charles Johnson, the Panthers were pretty desperate at the position.
Allen didn’t fit very well in the Bears switch to the 3-4 defense, and he will return to a familiar role in Carolina for the undefeated Panthers.
The Allen trade wasn’t the only one that Pace executed on Monday, as the team shipped former second-round pick (2013) to the New England Patriots for another sixth-round pick.
Bostic has been out with an ankle injury and the current Chicago front office had no ties to him. New England is getting an athletic linebacker who doesn’t have great ball skills.
Chicago is embracing their version of a rebuild and at this pace they are certainly in the race for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
