NFL AM: Packers Have Quarless’ Back After Gun Incident
Packers unlikely to cut TE Quarless after arrest; Giants pull long-term JPP contract offer; Wilson claims God spoke to him at Super Bowl
Packers sticking by arrested Quarless
“Stand by your man” is still a way of life in rural Wisconsin – particularly when that man is expected to be your starting tight end.
According to ESPN, sources in the Packers organization have indicated that the team plans on keeping tight end Andrew Quarless despite his July 4 arrest for discharging a firearm in public. Quarless was arrested at 5:35 a.m. in Miami Beach after firing a registered gun twice in the air following an alleged dispute with another man.
The team has not officially given any comment beyond “we are aware of the matter involving Andrew Quarless and in the process of gathering more information.”
It appears whatever information the team gathered isn’t damning enough to kick Quarless off the team.
However, he is still subject to the NFL’s personal conduct policy if he is formally charged of using his weapon to threaten another person. No court date has been set for Quarless in Miami Beach and he has already been released from custody.
Giants withdraw Pierre-Paul contract offer
New York’s long-term contract offer for Jason Pierre-Paul has gone up in smoke. You might even say it’s exploded on the launching pad.
OK, no more one-liners.
In all seriousness, the Giants have pulled back their $60 million, multi-year contract offer following the holiday fireworks mishap which left their defensive end hospitalized after burn injuries.
Fortunately, Pierre-Paul did not blow his chances at big money when he almost blew off his hand. He never intended to sign New York’s long-term offer, and will play next year under a $14.8 million franchise tag – provided he is still able to sign the tender, that is.
Pierre-Paul had 12.5 sacks and three forced fumbles last season.
Russell Wilson claims God spoke to him after Super Bowl INT
Russell Wilson is claiming that God spoke directly to him following his Super Bowl-losing interception to Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler, though skeptics and atheists are unlikely to be swayed from their positions upon learning the Lord’s first words to Wilson were not “Why in My name didn’t you hand the ball to Marshawn Lynch?”
During a Sunday Q&A at a San Diego megachurch, the Seahawks quarterback told those in attendance that the first man upstairs to speak to him following the interception was not his offensive coordinator.
“This may sound crazy to some people,” Wilson quite fairly prefaced. “But they make the play. The whole world is watching. They pick the ball off. And I take three steps to the sideline, and God says to me, ‘I’m using you.’”
At this point in time most of us would probably start freaking out, but Wilson continued to trudge back to the sidelines as if random conversation with the creator of the universe is no big thing.
“So I take another three steps. And God says to me ‘I want to see how you respond. But most importantly, I want them to see how you respond.’”
We are assuming that Wilson’s increasingly public demands for a better contract were not supposed to be part of that response, but then again we have not received any recent DMs from above to confirm or deny that fact.
