With training camp approaching and with players spending time away from their teams in the meantime, it’s that time of year when officials all over the league are just hoping players stay out of trouble, and this week hasn’t gone as they hoped.

Former Seattle Seahawks quarterback is the latest pro to have a run in with the law after an incident in the Orlando area early Friday morning. Jackson was arrested after allegedly pointed a loaded gun at a woman, with whom he was staying at a vacation home in the area, and threatened to kill her. He was charged with suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the police report, the woman stated that Jackson returned to their vacation home intoxicated around midnight, kicked in a bedroom door and began yelling at the woman before pulling out a gun, loading it and pointing it at her. The woman said she then retreated to the kitchen, where she grabbed a knife before Jackson was restrained by a friend who was also present in the vacation home.

Jackson told police there was no gun involved, but investigators recovered a gun from the kitchen counter, backing up the statement given by the accuser. Jackson did admit that he grabbed a backpack containing the gun, but said he only did so because the woman pulled the knife on him first. He also admitted to threatening to kill her. The free agent quarterback was booked into Osceola County Jail and later released on $2,500 bond.

There is a lot of “he said, she said” in the particular incident, and based on the police report it does not seem as though Jackson put his hands on the woman. However, any incident involving a gun allegedly being pointed at someone is alarming and that is found to be true, Jackson will likely face discipline. And it likely puts his chances of returning to the Seahawks in serious jeopardy. Coach Pete Carroll had stated a desire to bring Jackson back as Russell Wilson’s backup again in 2016, but that seems unlikely now.

Moreover, it’s another poor mark on the league, as gun violence continues to be a major story in the news, and something NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will have to take a serious look at when it comes across his desk.

NELSON AGHOLOR CASE TURNED OVER TO DISTRICT ATTORNEY

The Jackson incident follows another troubling incident from a few weeks ago involving Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor, and on Friday the case stemming from that incident was turned over to the Philadelphia District Attorney to determine how law enforcement will proceed.

Agholor has been accused of sexual assault by an exotic dancer at the Philadelphia Gentleman’s Club “Cheerleaders” on Thursday, June 9, just hours after the Eagles wrapped their final practice of the spring. Agholor was at the club with teammates Connor Barwin and Fletcher Cox, who are not named in the allegation. Both other players released statements distancing themselves from the incident.

Meanwhile, Agholor has not been charged with a crime while the investigation goes on and his lawyer Fortunato “Fred” Perri Jr. maintains the Eagles wide receiver’s innocence in the case.

“We’ve been in touch with the investigators, but I can’t comment on the progress of the investigation,” Perri told Philadelphia Magazine. “It’s always difficult when something like this happens. [Agholor] has been staying close with his family and doing the best he possibly can.”

The case being turned over to the district attorney’s office is pretty standard procedure and should lead to a decision one way or another whether to charge Agholor in the next several days.

Time will tell how law enforcement proceeds in this case, but even if the Eagles wide receiver is deemed innocent in this case, any time the term “sexual assault” comes up, it’s certainly going to raise some questions about the player’s decision-making. The choice to be at a gentleman’s club hours after the end of minicamp is a questionable one to say the least.

Agholor, Philadelphia’s first round pick in 2015, is already skating on thin ice with the organization after an extremely disappointing rookie season, in which he played in just 13 games and only caught 23 passes for 283 yards and a single touchdown, production that fell well below the lofty expectations the Eagles had for him to replace departed free agent wideout Jeremy Maclin. Agholor is the last first round pick of the Chip Kelly era and the organization would likely have no problem cutting him loose if they have good reason to.

MANZIEL SAGA TAKES ANOTHER STRANGE TURN

The situation around former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel gets stranger by the day.

Earlier this week, Manziel’s attorney accidentally sent a text doubting Manziel’s ability to stay clean, intended for a member of the legal team, to the Associated Press, the AP reported Friday. The text indicated that the defense team was seeking a plea deal, but contained doubt it could work out.

“Heaven help us if one of the conditions is to pee in a bottle,” the attorney wrote, according to the AP.

The attorney, Bob Hinton, also indicated he’d been alerted to the possibility that Manziel had made a purchase of over $1,000 at a store called “Gas Pipe” that specializes in drug paraphernalia. The store is reportedly located close to wear Manziel was involved in a hit-and-run accident earlier this week.

The stories involving Manziel continue to get stranger and stranger and at this point, you just have to wonder how and when this saga ends.
