NFL AM: More Bad News For Galette, Redskins
Junior Galette ruptures his Achilles and loses money; More embarrassment for the 49ers; Crazy talk from Russell Wilson.
Redskins Lose Galette For Season
When the New Orleans Saints released veteran defensive end Junior Galette last month, the Washington Redskins were quick to scoop up the talented pass rusher.
With Galette’s potential violence charges stemming from a video of him whipping a woman with a belt, the Redskins were able to acquire his services at a discount, as he signed for the veteran minimum salary.
Sometimes you get what you pay for.
In an unfortunate turn of events, Galette tore his Achilles during Wednesday’s practice and he will be lost for the season.
To make matters worse for Galette, the New Orleans Saints are trying to withhold the $1.25 million he had guaranteed for this season, claiming that he violated the terms of his contract with his involvement in the video in question.
What does this mean for the Redskins?
Washington is in the same position they were in after the draft, when they addressed some of their pass rushing issues with Mississippi State defensive end Preston Smith in Round 2. They are trying to replace Brian Orakpo, who signed with the Tennessee Titans in free agency.
Opposite Ryan Kerrigan, who is their best defensive player, Washington will now have to depend on the rookie Smith, as well as Trent Murphy, who hasn’t done much in his career.
Galette gave Washington a legitimate pass rushing threat opposite Kerrigan and he was certainly making a difference according to his coaches.
“He’s an absolute ball of energy,” Redskins defensive coordinator Joe Barry said. “He’s been phenomenal since he’s been here, nothing but positive. He’s done nothing but work his ever-living butt off. It’s amazing when the ball is snapped the juice he has coming off the ball. That’s every snap. It’s every fricking play.”
Galette burned plenty of bridges on his way out New Orleans as he got on his girlfriend’s Twitter account and made some disparaging remarks about his former teammates as well as insinuating that Saints head coach Sean Payton was drunk at team meetings and claimed that he held training camp in West Virginia because he had a girlfriend there.
A torn Achilles is a very difficult injury for a pass rusher to overcome and with Galette’s personal history it’s conceivable that his career may be finished. Certainly his career of getting big contracts.
The 49ers Nightmare Offseason Continues
What’s worse than having four key starters on your team, including the best two players retire?
Maybe losing your best pass rusher because he can’t stay out of trouble?
Losing one of the best head coaches in football? Check.
To add more insult to injury for the San Francisco 49ers, linebacker Ahmad Brooks has been indicted on a rape charge, stemming from former teammate and reprehensible human being Ray McDonald’s pool party back in December.
“The organization is aware that a misdemeanor charge has been filed against Ahmad Brooks stemming from a December 2014 matter,” general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement Wednesday. “We take any charge against a member of this organization seriously and are in communication with the NFL. Ahmad is returning home to California and will not participate in Saturday’s game.”
According to police, the alleged victim said she fell and hit her head on the ground near the pool and does not remember the sexual encounter. However, she alleged that home surveillance video shows McDonald and Brooks molesting her as she lay unconscious. McDonald maintained they had a consensual sexual encounter in his hot tub.
If you’re 49ers general manager Trent Baalke, don’t you have to have a zero tolerance policy at this point?
The 2015 season is going to be a disaster, with or without Ahmad Brooks. He’s not an impact player and the fact that he’s even on the roster today considering all that’s happened with the team is an absolute insult to not only the female 49ers fans, but women everywhere.
It’s time for San Francisco to do the right thing and hopefully make a statement to the rest of the team by letting go of Brooks.
Russell Wilson Goes Over The Top
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has a squeaky clean reputation.
Unlike the aforementioned Junior Galette and Ahmad Brooks, he’s never been in trouble with the law, he does good things in the community and he says all the right things.
Maybe too many of the right things.
By all accounts, Wilson is a really good guy, but he seems to be taking things a little too far….again.
After suggesting that he’s practicing abstinence with celebrity girlfriend Ciera, Wilson is taking the “goody-two-shoes” act to the endorsement avenue and using the man upstairs.
In a feature for Rolling Stone, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson claimed Recovery Water, a brand he endorses, helped to heal him from a head injury.
“I banged my head during the Packers game in the playoffs, and the next day I was fine,” he said. “It was the water.”
No it wasn’t Russell.
He later backed off somewhat saying that there’s no medical proof that water can prevent and then heal concussions. ‘
Of course there isn’t any proof. It’s impossible.
As for Wilson’s goal-line interception which cost the Seahawks back-to-back Super Bowl victories, he feels it was just part of the plan.
“The play happens, I take three steps, and God says to me, ‘I’m using you.’ My sixth step, God says to me, ‘I want to see how you respond, but more importantly I want [the world] to see how you respond.’ ”
So it was God’s plan for the New England Patriots to win Super Bowl XLIX?
I find that less believable than Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell saying that he wouldn’t change that particular play call.
“That play we called will always be there to drive me. I wouldn’t change it, I think it was the right thing,” Bevell said. “Coach Carroll has done a great job with it as well. I think to answer your question, in terms of totally moving on, that night is rough, the next morning is rough, getting on the plane is rough, but as soon as I got here and I was able to watch it for myself on the tape and see our copy and look at it that way and do the analyzing of it, once that was over I was able to put it behind me. I’m okay. I really am.”
Russell Wilson seems like a really great guy who is doing great things on and off the field. Just tone it down a little bit. Even Tim Tebow is rolling his eyes.
