NFL AM: Colts Let Go of Trent Richardson

Colts release Trent Richardson; Brandon Browner signs with Saints; Antonio Cromartie and Darrelle Revis reunite

Colts, Trent Richardson part ways

The Cleveland Browns finally won something — their trade with the Indianapolis Colts in 2013. Cleveland sent Trent Richardson to Indianapolis in exchange for a first-round pick. (No need to torture Browns fans and explain what they did with that pick, though).

Richardson was released by Indy on Thursday, a move that was pretty obvious once the Colts signed Frank Gore earlier in the week. Of course, the writing was already on the wall for Richardson, who may single-handedly be responsible for no running back ever again being taken with the first five picks of the NFL Draft.

Richardson never got more than 10 carries after the Colts’ 11th game, and never saw the field in three playoff games.

Richardson told ESPN.com that he’s not the one who sucks.

“It just didn’t work out,” Richardson said. “I’m not saying anything bad about the program, but that program just didn’t fit me at all. Me and the GM didn’t see eye to eye. It was a bad marriage for us.”

Richardson says he was suspended for the final two playoff games after he missed a walk-through because his wife was having pregnancy complications.

Due to the suspension, the team can opt out of paying Richardson the $3.1 million it owes him for next season. Richardson says he will most likely file a grievance to get some or all of that money back.

A better question than whether he gets his money back is what team will be willing to take a risk on him?

Browner latest DB defection from Patriots

Suddenly, the defending Super Bowl champs don’t have any starting cornerbacks.

Days after Darrelle Revis bolted for the New York Jets, the New England Patriots also lost Brandon Browner to New Orleans. Browner signed a three-year contract worth $15 million, $10 million of which is guaranteed.

Sean Payton cited cornerback as the Saints’ position of greatest need this offseason, and Browner gives them a Pro Bowler at the position — albeit one from 2011.

Despite losing Revis, the Pats did not pick up Browner’s $2 million roster bonus this week.

Browner’s off-field problems have sometimes trumped his on-field production. He served a suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, which kept him off the field for Seattle’s 2013 Super Bowl run and carried over to the start of his short Patriots career.

Browner has 11 interceptions in his four NFL seasons.

Cromartie to join Revis on Jets

Antonio Cromartie and Darrelle Revis are getting the band back together.

The duo, who played for the Jets when they were last competitive from 2010-12, will be reunited after Cromartie agreed to a four-year, $32 millon contract with New York.

Revis signed with the Jets on Tuesday, coming back after spending 2013 in Tampa Bay and last season winning a Super Bowl with New England.

Revis said he wanted to get “Batman and Robin” back together at his introductory press conference, and a day later that has happened after Cromartie signed following a one-season stint in Arizona.

New Jets head coach Todd Bowles was Cromartie’s defensive coordinator with the Cardinals.

The Jets have also signed Buster Skrine, giving them three starting-caliber corners this offseason. That will certainly bolster a secondary that allowed 31 touchdown passes last year, the worst mark in the AFC.

Alex Hickey can vividly recall most significant NFL events going back to Walter Payton's final game in 1987, including the ones that didn't make him cry. Since 2008, his full-time job has been covering college football, specifically McNeese State, for the Lake Charles (La.) American Press.
