NFL AM: Bengals WR A.J. Green Is Focused On Football

A.J. Green isn’t worried about his contract, the Rams draft Isaiah Battle in the supplemental draft, and the NFL loses a great.

A.J. Green not worried about a new deal:

The wide receiver position is almost a microcosm of the NFL.  While the league is full of good guys, we seem to hear the most about the bad guys in the game. Similarly, while NFL receivers are often referred to as diva’s, guys like Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones, and now Cincinnati Bengals receiver A.J. Green have put their teammates and the game of football ahead of themselves by making it clear that playing the game of football is a bigger priority than breaking the bank.

Green spoke with ESPN.com at his children’s football camp this week, and seemed more than ready to head into the 2015 season under his current deal.

“You know I watch ESPN all the time, and that’s all they talk about,” Green told ESPN.com. “But like I say, I’m just here to play football. My body of work will speak for itself.

“I don’t get into all the ‘I need a contract’ stuff,” continued Green. “I’m not here for money. I’m not broke. So I’m fine. I can wait until the end of the year to get a contract, but I know that time is coming.”

Green is without question a top-5 receiver in the NFL and Cincinnati’s best player, so it’s in the best interest of the Bengals to lock him in long-term, but it has to be comforting to Cincinnati and its fans to have a young man that isn’t all about the money who they have to negotiate with.

There’s still a lot of question about whether or not Andy Dalton is the guy who can get the Bengals over the top, but make no mistake about it, he’s going to need Green to deliver the ball to if he’s going to be that guy.

The Bengals are loaded with talent, but Green is the most talented player on the roster. Luckily for Cincinnati, it sounds like his attitude is on par with his ability.

Rams select Isaiah Battle in the supplemental draft:

After representatives from 25 of the NFL’s 32 franchises showed up to see Isaiah Battle’s pro day earlier this week, there seemed to be a very good chance that the Clemson tackle would be the first player selected in the supplemental draft since the Cleveland Browns took Josh Gordon in the 2nd-Round in 2012.

While some thought Battle could go as high as the third round, the St. Louis Rams took Battle with their selection in Round-5.

The Rams, like a lot of NFL teams need a lot of help on the offensive line, and Battle is just the latest commitment in an offseason that focused heavily on the offensive line.

St. Louis drafted four offensive linemen in the draft this May, taking an offensive lineman with three of their first five selections.

While the Rams are excited to bring in another offensive lineman to add depth across the front line, the plan with Battle is to work him in slowly and to have him ready to go for the 2016 season.

“We felt it was an opportunity to get an earlier round value for a later round price,” Rams general manager Les Snead said in a release from the team. “He’s going to practice what would’ve been his final year of college eligibility with us, go through our offseason program, and then start his rookie season a year from now.

“This will allow us to bring him along gradually both on and off the field,” explained Snead. “Now it’s up to Isaiah and us to go work to reach his potential as a person and player.”

The offensive line might be the most glaring hole for a Rams team that’s bursting with talent, and St. Louis hopes that Battle and the rest of the offensive linemen the team invested in this offseason can help turn that around over the long haul.

Raiders great Kenny Stabler passes away:

He was called, “The Snake.” Kenny Stabler was as famous for his wild, hair-on-fire style of play as he was for leading the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl.

Stabler’s career began in 1970 and ran all the way through 1984, and his career is widely regarded as one of the best of any player who hasn’t been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

While Stabler’s statistics are far from overwhelming, his place in the history of the league, and some of its most famous early moments like, “The Sea Of Hands,” “The Holy Roller,” and “The Ghost To The Post” has made many believe Stabler belongs in Canton along side so many of his teammates and his head coach John Madden.

“I was head coach of the Raiders the entire time Kenny was there and he led us to a whole bunch of victories including one in Super Bowl XI,” John Madden said in a statement. “I’ve often said, if I had one drive to win a game to this day, and I had a quarterback to pick, I would pick Kenny. Snake was a lot cooler than I was. He was a perfect quarterback and a perfect Raider. When you think about the Raiders you think about Ken Stabler. Kenny loved life. It is a sad day for all Raiders.”

It’s been over 30 years since Kenny Stabler took a snap in the NFL, but if someone utters the words, “Oakland Raiders quarterback,” the image of a lanky, sometimes-awkward looking, but always exciting kid they called, “The Snake” will likely pop into your head. That, perhaps as much as any statistic, or famous play shows the impact that Stabler had on the NFL and the Raider family.

Kenny Stabler was 69.
