Newton out, Anderson to start for Panthers

Published

For the second time this season, Derek Anderson will start for the Carolina Panthers against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Starting quarterback Cam Newton was released from the hospital on Wednesday after a car accident and will be listed as out for Sunday’s game.

“It doesn’t, truthfully, change what I do through the week,” Anderson said. “The preparation doesn’t change for me.”

Anderson said he was eating lunch with his wife when dozens of people alerted him to news reports that Newton was involved in a rollover accident. Anderson, who contacted Newton’s assistant for details, was told he couldn’t go visit Newton, so he continued to the team facility to watch film and go about his normal preparation.

Coach Ron Rivera informed Anderson on Wednesday that he would start.

“Considering the circumstances, he’s our leader, and the way he played — to lose him to this is very frustrating for him I’m sure,” Anderson said. “If he could be out there he would. He’s played all season with bumps in bruises.”
