NCAA Coach Of The Year Rankings

Find out which new name is on our list of the top coaches this season.

Coaching matters in football more than any other sport. Coaching matters even more in college football as you can outscheme your opponents on a weekly basis. We are going to rank the Top 5 coaches in college football from week to week in our Coach of the Year Rankings.

#1 Dan Mullen, Mississippi State Bulldogs

Dan Mullen shouldn’t be dropped after a bye week. His Bulldogs still have Alabama and Ole Miss left as the two toughest games on the schedule and we’ll see how he comes out of that.

#2 Rich Rodriguez, Arizona Wildcats

Rich Rod is doing more with less than anyone in the country. We can’t drop him on their bye week and it will be interesting to see if Rodriguez gets any traction for what is likely to be an available head coaching job in Gainesville.

#3 Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss Rebels

Hugh Freeze’s team avoided a letdown with a beatdown of visiting Tennessee. The Rebels don’t look all that talented offensively, but they do have a lot of NFL players on that defense. It’s a good story for Freeze since he’s a hometown guy.

#4 Brian Kelly, Notre Dame

I’m all in on the Brian Kelly train. The progress that he’s made with the Notre Dame program has been tremendous. To be one play away from taking down Florida State in Tallahassee is something that nobody has been able to do in a couple years and his team can compete with anyone, anywhere.

#5 Jimbo Fisher, FSU

Jimbo Fisher is expected to win and that’s a tough thing to do. The ‘Noles are missing a lot of talent on defense and Fisher has been able to hold things together despite numerous distractions.

Again, this isn’t a list of the best coaches in the country, it’s a list of which coaches are doing the best job this season.

After the Buccaneers surprised everyone by taking a kicker with the 59th overall pick in the draft, G.M. Jason Licht explained the move by heaping superlatives on the player. “I was very excited along with my staff and coaches about Roberto for a very long time,” Licht told PFT Live in May 2016. “It’s not [more]
