Mike Shanahan has discussions with Bills, 49ers

Published

Mike Shanahan has had discussions with the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers about their head-coaching positions, according to reports.

The Bills have been in contact with Shanahan, the former head coach of the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins, and hope to set up an interview with him, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Saturday.

The Bills’ job came open after former coach Doug Marrone opted out of his contract Wednesday.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Friday that the 49ers are expected to interview Shanahan this weekend. The 49ers’ officials already planned to be in Denver this weekend to interview Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase.

The 49ers are looking to fill the opening created when Jim Harbaugh and the team parted ways after last Sunday’s season finale and he was named head coach at Michigan this week.

Shanahan has said previously that he is interested in getting back into coaching but wants to go where he can win right away. The Bills went 9-7 this season and the 49ers finished 8-8.

Shanahan, 62, has spent the 2014 season out of football after being fired by the Redskins in December 2013. Shanahan won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1997 and 1998 with the Broncos, but finished 24-40 in four seasons with the Redskins.

Shanahan was the 49ers’ offensive coordinator from 1992 through 1994, his final season being the last time San Francisco won a Super Bowl.

Shanahan’s son, Kyle, the Cleveland Browns’ offensive coordinator, reportedly is also under consideration for the 49ers’ job.
