McCoy backs Foles as Eagles’ starter in 2015

Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly hasn’t committed to next season’s starting quarterback just yet, but running back LeSean McCoy feels the job belongs to Nick Foles.

McCoy said on NFL Network on Friday evening that Foles should remain the starter and teammates view him as a leader in the locker room.

“I like Nick. The person and player that everybody thought he was, he is. There were a lot of injuries this year, Nick, obviously got injured. He gets all of the blame and he shouldn’t,” said McCoy, who finished third in the league with 1,319 yards rushing in 2014. “I think Nick’s a good quarterback. He’s the leader of our team. Things just didn’t work out for him this year due to injury, but we’ve got his back. As a team, we didn’t play well enough to win and get into the playoffs.”

Last season, Foles completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 2,163 yards with 13 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. Foles suffered a season-ending clavicle injury in the Nov. 2 win in Houston. The Eagles were 6-2 in games Foles started in 2014 and 14-4 over the past two seasons.

Kelly expressed support for Foles late in the season but did not fully endorse him as the team’s starter.

“The reality is the reality,” Kelly said at the time, referring to the broken collarbone that ended Foles’ season after eight games.

“I can’t say, ‘Hey, let’s not make a decision because I need to see him play 16 more games.’ In certain times we’re going to have to make decisions, so you have to make it based on what you have. We don’t have any control over the injury.”
