McCloughan officially Redskins’ new GM
The Washington Redskins on Thursday announced that Scot McCloughan will become the team’s general manager.
The move had been reported by various outlets over the previous couple of days. McCloughan received a four-year deal, according to the Washington Post, and is expected to replace team president Bruce Allen as the team’s top personnel chief. Allen is expected to remain president.
McCloughan is a highly respected personnel expert who has received credit for building much of the current San Francisco 49ers’ roster and helping Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider assemble a Super Bowl champion.
As the 49ers’ vice president of football operations from 2005 to 2007 and the GM in 2008 and 2009, McCloughan put together the bulk of the roster that reached the NFC title game in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons.
He left San Francisco in 2010 and rejoined former Green Bay associate Schneider in Seattle. He left the Seahawks in early 2014, shortly after they won the Super Bowl for the first time.
In an interview with ESPN’s Seth Wickersham that was published in December, McCloughan admitted he had a drinking problem in San Francisco, and that issue seemingly was at the heart of his departure from both the 49ers and Seahawks.
According to the ESPN story, McCloughan had been running his own scouting service and is still very current with the 2015 draft prospects.
The Redskins obviously are counting on his draft acumen to help fix a team that went 4-12 this season. They have the No. 5 pick in the draft — the first time they have had a first-round pick since they traded three to St. Louis for the right to draft Robert Griffin III second overall in 2012.
He also will have to help coach Jay Gruden determine the future at quarterback, where the Redskins rotated through Griffin, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy in 2014.
