With the 28th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected former Duke guard Laken Tomlinson. Here’s what our Football Insiders experts thought of the pick:

“Really interesting pick here by Detroit. I like the fit a lot and it may be a little high, but I felt the same about some of Dallas’ interior line selections in 2013 and 2014 and look how those have turned out. The Lions, like those Cowboys, had massive needs up front to protect Matt Stafford and give him more time to locate Calvin Johnson, as well as to boost their inconsistent ground game. Laken Tomlinson helps in both areas, but excels as a pass blocker, using his power to offset that of interior pass rushers. As an added bonus by trading down to make this pick, the Lions also got another interior lineman, bringing back Manny Ramirez, who they drafted in 2007, as well as a fifth rounder this season and another next. That makes up a bit for the value reach on Tomlinson.” – Devon Jeffreys

“What a culture change for Detroit. Tomlinson has expressed a goal of someday improving his native Jamaica’s healthcare system, whereas the now departed Dominic Raiola was the dirtiest player in the league by a wide margin. In conjunction with the trade for Manny Ramirez, I like what the Lions have done to improve their interior line – and their overall likeability.” – Alex Hickey

———————————————————————————————————————

“It seems like only yesterday when Matt Millen was falling in love with wide receivers and running the Lions into the ground. Detroit has come a long way as they trade for Denver Broncos guard Manny Ramirez and add another guard in Laken Tomlinson.  If the Lions are going to continue to do things the right way, they may just win a playoff game this decade.” – Charlie Bernstein
