Lions sweating Suh contract
Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh could be down to two home games at Ford Field.
Suh stands to become a free agent at the end of the season and a deal in line with the $100 million contract of J.J. Watt of the Texans or Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, drafted one spot after Suh as the third overall pick in 2010, is out of the Lions’ price range given commitments to wide receiver Calvin Johnson and quarterback Matthew Stafford. Stafford has three years left on a contract extension that incudes a $17 million cap hit in 2015. Johnson’s cap figure is $20.58 million in 2015 on a deal that runs through 2019.
McCoy signed a seven-year, $98 million contract with $51 million guaranteed. Suh, advised by many including Warren Buffett, told the Wall Street Journal he wants to be a billionaire, but is deferring all questions about his future to agent Jimmy Sexton.
“I don’t think he even deals with it,” Lions coach Jim Caldwell said when asked if the contract was an issue for Suh during the season. “It was one of those things that was dealt with before the season and that was it. The only time it ever comes up is when one of you guys asks that question.”
Suh is one of the three highest-paid players in the NFL this season with a cap figure of $22.4 million. Placing the franchise tag on Suh would cost the Lions one fourth of the total projected salary cap at $27 million.
“I don’t know if it’s a quest to be a billionaire,” Suh said this week. “It’s more of being successful on and off the football field. I got a degree for a reason. I plan to use it.”
