Lions’ Suh: Agent will pick my next NFL destination
ALLEN PARK, Mich. — When the Detroit Lions played the Minnesota Vikings at TCF Bank Stadium in Week 6, they sacked Teddy Bridgewater eight times and held Minnesota to 212 yards in a 17-3 victory. On Sunday, the Vikings know containing defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who had two of those sacks, will be key to creating more offense.
“He has those rare attributes that are hard to find for an inside guy,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. “I think he’s one of the best of all-time.”
But Sunday’s game is of more significance for Suh. It could be the last time he plays a home game at Ford Field. The second-overall pick in 2010, Suh said he hasn’t thought about Sunday potentially being his last time playing at his home stadium for the past five years. And after talking about the possibility, Suh said it’s not up to him whether or not he’s in Detroit next year.
“No clue,” he said when asked if Sunday will be his final home game with the Lions. “It’s not my decision.”
Pressed on where he expects to play next year, Suh deflected to his agent Jimmy Sexton.
“Go speak to Jimmy about that if you really want an answer to that question,” he said.
Does that mean Sexton will decide Suh’s team next year?
“It’ll be Jimmy’s decision, so we’ll go with that,” Suh said.
The Lions could make the decision to franchise Suh, though that would cost nearly $27 million, so the choice will most likely be on Suh or, apparently, his agent. And on the open market, he’d likely become the highest paid defensive player in the NFL because his $64.5 million rookie contract gives him enormous leverage after two All-Pro seasons and likely a third this year.
Suh, though, is focused on the game, not his future.
“I always want to play on a high level, so that’s going to be my goal just like last week and the week before that,” Suh said. “No matter where we’re at, I want to play at a high level and impose my will, have teams focus on me, free other people up and at the same time make plays.”
Besides a five-sack game the next week against Buffalo, the Vikings have done better protecting Bridgewater since the earlier matchup against the Lions, going down 13 times the past six games.
The Vikings should have opportunities to sack Matthew Stafford, too, as he has been sacked a career-high 39 times this year. The game will likely be decided in the trenches, and after a six-sack performance Sunday against Tampa Bay, the Lions should have the edge.
“Most of the time they just whooped us up front,” Zimmer said of the last matchup.
SERIES HISTORY: 107th regular-season meeting. Vikings lead series 69-35-2. On Nov. 11, 2012, the Vikings won 34-24 at the Metrodome, but Calvin Johnson had 12 catches for 207 yards, part of an eight-game run with 100-plus yards that helped him break Jerry Rice’s single-season receiving yardage record.
