Lions president confident team will re-sign Suh
Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand said Sunday he expects the team will be able to re-sign defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
“I really do believe he’s got a lot invested in here, in himself and the community and the football team,” Lewand said during an interview on WDIV-TV in Detroit. “He wants to have success in the NFL, obviously, but he wants to do that with us.
“I think there’s a very, very good chance that we can get something done with him in the next few weeks.”
The All-Pro Suh, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by the Lions, is eligible to become a free agent if the team does not use its franchise tag on him by March 2. The franchise tag reportedly would be $26.9 million for 2015.
“We’ve had a good chunk of our salary cap tied up in three players over the last few years,” Lewand told the TV station. “Matthew (Stafford), Calvin (Johnson) and Ndamukong have all had very lucrative contracts under the old rookie system, and even as Matthew and Calvin have done their extensions. So we’ve done that, we’ve lived in that environment. There’s no reason we can’t continue to live in that environment.”
Suh’s price tag for a new deal would be steep, given the Houston Texans gave defensive end J.J. Watt a $100 million deal last year without the leverage of free agency.
