Lions claim QB Gilbert off waivers
The Sports Xchange
The Detroit Lions claimed quarterback Garrett Gilbert off waivers from the New England Patriots and waived quarterback Anthony Boone.
Gilbert was released by the Patriots on Thursday to make room for quarterback Matt Flynn, an unrestricted free agent who played for the Green Bay Packers last season.
Gilbert, 23, was originally drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Southern Methodist. The 6-foot-4, 221-pounder was released by St. Louis on Aug. 30, 2014, and signed to the practice squad on Sept. 1. He was released from the St. Louis practice squad on Oct. 28 and joined the New England practice squad on Dec. 17, 2014.
Boone, an undrafted free agent out of Duke, was brought into camp as the team’s fourth quarterback.
