Lions C Raiola admits ill intent
Detroit Lions center Dominic Raiola perceived the New England Patriots to be running up the score with a last-minute touchdown, and he admitted following the 34-6 loss that he went at the knees of a defensive lineman in retaliation.
Raiola said Sunday night that he intentionally launched himself at the knees of a defender, trying to cut-block Patriots defensive tackle Zach Moore on the Lions’ final offensive play of the game.
“I cut him,” Raiola said, per the Detroit Free Press. “We took a knee, so I cut the nose (tackle). They went for six (a touchdown). They went for a touchdown at 2 minutes. They could have took three knees and the game could have been over. It’s football. He wants to keep playing football, let’s play football. Not a big deal. It’s football.”
Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork called Raiola’s play “dirty” but he was not penalized.
“You’re taking a knee,” Wilfork said. “They’d get mad if we were just to blow up one of their players, so I mean, it’s just uncalled for. But at the same time, you always have to protect yourself, so you always have to play with your neck on a swivel and being alert for 60 minutes, and it came down to it today on a bonehead play like that.”
The Patriots lined up for a field goal following the two-minute warning with the Lions out of timeouts.
Lions defensive tackle C.J. Mosley was called for roughness for hitting long-snapper Danny Aiken, giving the Patriots a first down. Rather than kneeling to run out the clock, the Patriots handed off to running back LeGarrette Blount for his second touchdown of the game.
