Lions boot struggling rookie kicker Freese

Published

Alex Henery signed with the Detroit Lions on Monday, when struggling rookie place-kicker Nate Freese was waived.

Freese missed a 41-yard field goal wide left to end the first half and was 0-for-4 from 40 yards and longer in the first three games.

Coach Jim Caldwell held a workout for veteran kickers last week to put Freese on notice and said after Sunday’s 19-7 victory over the Green Bay Packers that changes were coming.

Henery, Garrett Hartley and the late Rob Bironas, the 36-year-old former Titans kicker who died in a one-car accident over the weekend, worked out for the Lions at their Allen Park facility last week.

Henery, 27, was signed over Hartley, who was a known commodity to some of the coaching staff that came to Detroit from New Orleans, including special teams coach John Bonamego.

Henery was released in August after the Philadelphia Eagles went with rookie Cody Parkey in a kicking competition staged throughout training camp.

Henery made 74 of 86 career field-goal attempts in three seasons with the Eagles, who drafted him 120th overall (fourth round) in the 2011 draft.
