LB Shazier might play for Steelers on MNF
The Sports Xchange
PITTSBURGH — Coach Mike Tomlin listed second-year linebacker Ryan Shazier as questionable for Monday night’s game against the San Diego Chargers.
However, it’s looking good for Shazier to return after a two-week absence because of a shoulder injury.
Shazier, who practiced with the team on Monday and Wednesday, amassed 15 tackles, recorded a sack, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble in his most recent game against the San Francisco 49ers.
–Wide receiver Martavis Bryant said he was held out of practice on Wednesday by coach Mike Tomlin because of soreness, but he did not specify which body part is ailing. The Steelers do not have to issue an injury report until Thursday because they play on Monday.
–Wide receiver Markus Wheaton (ankle) did not practice on Monday, but he returned on Wednesday. Wheaton injured an ankle on the second play of the Baltimore game and aggravated in the second half. He said he is on track to play against San Diego on Monday Night.
–Inside linebacker Sean Spence, on allowing 191 rushing yards to the Baltimore Ravens: “The runs they hit we came up short in the gap. We can’t do that. To be a great defense we have to be able to take away the run. Obviously, Baltimore was struggling with the run going into that game, and we put them right back on track. We take that to heart. We don’t want guys coming into our stadium and running the ball on us.”
–The Steelers are 42-24 in Monday Night Football games and coach Mike Tomlin is 9-2 on MNF. The Steelers trail only the 49ers (47) and Cowboys (43) for most victories on MNF.
–The Steelers have won four of their last five road games, dating to last season. Their only road loss in that span came against Super Bowl champion New England in the first week this season.
–The Steelers are 0-2 against AFC teams and don’t want to fall too far behind against conference foes because conference record is an important playoff tiebreaker.
–Kicker Josh Scobee missed in four games with the Steelers this season before he was released on Saturday. Kicker Shaun Suisham, who is out for the season because of a knee injury, missed five field goals in 32 games over the previous two seasons.
