Kubiak to interview with Broncos

Published

The Denver Broncos will interview Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak about their head-coaching vacancy, according to reports Friday.

CBSSports.com’s Jason La Canfora reported that Kubiak is expected to interview this weekend.

Kubiak, 53, appears to be the top choice of Broncos general manager John Elway.

Elway and Kubiak are longtime friends. In Denver, Kubiak spent nine years (1983-91) as Elway’s backup and they were roommates for road games. Kubiak also served four seasons (1995-98) as Elway’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Broncos.

The Broncos submitted a request to the Ravens on Tuesday night to interview Kubiak. The Ravens planned to talk to Kubiak on Thursday to gauge his interest in interviewing for the Broncos’ job.

The Ravens released a statement from Kubiak late Sunday night that he was staying with the team and not pursuing any of the open jobs around the league. But then the Broncos and head coach John Fox parted ways on Monday after the disappointing 24-13 divisional-round playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

The Baltimore Sun reported Thursday that the Ravens wouldn’t stand in the way if Kubiak wanted to talk to the Broncos.

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday he was anticipating Kubiak’s return to the Ravens, although he didn’t rule out the possibility of Kubiak leaving.

“I’m planning on Gary being back,” Harbaugh said. “If that changes, we’ll deal with it if it comes up. I don’t anticipate that changing at this time.”

Kubiak previously was head coach of the Houston Texans from 2006 to 2013. He was 63-66 overall and led the Texans to their first two postseason appearances. He was fired with three games left in the 2013 season.

Kubiak just finished his first season with the Ravens. Under Kubiak, the offense finished the regular season ranked 12th in total yardage (364.9 per game) and eighth in points (25.6 per game).
